Introducing Betty White

Ah, no, Daisy was three and a bit when I adopted her - that was December 2020, so she’s pushing five now. Yes, it’s a shame not to have kitten pics. She’d have been an adorable kitten. Phoebe is determined to be a kitten forever and she’s pushing eight, lol. They play together on occasion, usually whenI’m trying to sleep. I don’t know how old Phoebe was when we got her - the shelter and our vet had very different estimates, because she was very thin (turned out she has IBD or something like it) - the shelter said 14 months, the vet said 8 months.

So right about kitten stool, it’s something else! There’s a particularly hideous green car paint I see that I call Baby Cat Poo.

You’re about six months late to this, but thanks! I left the door open and she cuddled up into my armpit. She started a routine that we both look forward to every night. Interestingly, it took her three months to decide she wanted to sit in my lap.

This is last night. I always let her decide how close she wants to snuggle.

All the flavors are multi-protein.. I know the specialist would recommend that I try something other than chicken. I don't want to feed fish flavors to Betty. Fish is potentially inflammatory and possibly not novel to her even though she turns her nose up at fish I offered to her earlier.

Guar Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Xanthan Gum

There's three gums in that food. Xanthan gum could be problematic for some cats (and for some people too.) Krista and I were/are both sensitive to xanthan gum. No fun the next day.

But if I wasn't already considering avoiding chicken, I might try that one with Betty despite my protests about the gums. There's no carrageenan and no agar-agar. It's got that going for it. And there's only one way to know if Betty is sensitive to xanthan gum.

There's a pet food store nearby (just a little further than the one I usually go to) that has a pretty impressive selection of boutique brands. I'm sure I've already cruised those shelves several times. But I'll look again. There are a couple other places less nearby but still not terribly far that carry Mouser. Local store only carries the Rabbit and Mouse flavor. If I'm up around the other two, I'd like to see if they have the other Mouser flavors.

Yesterday and last night went much better with ondansetron back in her. She ate a whole ounce of Rawz rabbit out of her feeder. That’s practically back to a full overnight once more.

Not quite back to clearing a plate in one go. Her dinner and breakfast first pass is still only half the plate. But I have more confidence this morning that she won’t do a sniff and snub later.

Well that’s better. I sat here stroking her long enough that she went back for a second pass already. That looks much better. About 2/3 eaten.

Yeah, those soft, furrypurring additionals can be surprising! But not to worry. They're there for the best PAWSible reasons and they are VERY beneficial to human health and wellbeing. The more, in fact, the better.

The hairball treats got the sniff and snub treatment. Either this bag has already gone stale. Or we may need to switch to new treats. I gave her a single Greenie because I’m nervous about her not taking anything for hairballs. But I’m also nervous about a repeat of the double-ended spits. She loved that Greenie so much, she almost resorted to eating the hairball treats looking for another. Ultimately, I decided to remove the snubbed halves. Best not to overdo it. She was still scrounging around for another treat. I gave her a freeze-dried rabbit treat. Those don’t seem to give her grief and she enjoys those. They probably do nothing for her hairballs though.

First breakfast is in the books.

Xfinity has downed my Internet service for “up to two consecutive hours” to make network improvements. I have to make a choice between going into the office or going to a more local coffee shop. I am coming home for lunch because I don’t want to put all of Betty’s lunch portions in feeders. So I’m probably going to the local coffee shop. Ironically, I’m bummed about this because I am enjoying my home brewed coffee right now and don’t want to go out. It’s a shame I don’t have mobile hot spot in my phone plan. I think I have to give up my unlimited data plan to get that feature.

As could have been predicted by now, the moment she saw me dressed in street clothes (even without the shower this morning—showered yesterday after my run) and getting ready to go out, Betty went under the bookcase. I gave her a few scritches and told her she wasn’t going to the vet. She remained unconvinced.



I loaded a feeder with an ounce of Rawz in case I get delayed in returning for lunch. She probably won’t touch it until 2 pm anyway.

Gah! Just realized because home internet is out, I’m cut off from my Betty cams.

And in a, “you should have realized this earlier because you realized this earlier moment”, I remembered that I am waiting for the Such and Such Camera is Back Online notifications on my phone to know when I can return home. As the outage has nearly finished the promised two hours and I still don’t have connection again, I’m glad I put out a feeder for Betty.

If I gave her my number, she would never stop calling it.

I returned home for lunch to find the floof sleeping in her corner cloud. I thought maybe I could prepare her lunch and go back out to the taproom without waking her. No such luck. But she did eat directly after plating it. Almost makes me regret the large portion in the feeder. She’ll figure it out. It’s been a long time since she’s overeaten.

Just as I was about to leave for the taproom for a bonus beer and a burger this week, I got the camera notifications telling me I was back online again. Well shoot!

USPS is giving me grief though. So I decided to use lunch hour for that. A package and an envelope we’re supposed to arrive yesterday. But I got a notification in their app saying they had no delivery access. I don’t buy that. But whatever. So today the envelope arrives but not the package. And they still haven’t updated the tracking info. So I’m here at the Post Office waiting for them to figure out their story. And I’m trying my damnedest to hold back the

She took my number and said she’ll call me when she can get a hold of yesterday’s carrier. Sounds like it wasn’t even supposed to go with him yesterday. I don’t understand how many carriers they have delivering to my one mailbox.

Hate to say this, but don't feel so all alone. You may have seen some of my rants about various courier types here on site, or (hopefully) not, and/or others' posts of woe on the same subject.
It's said that the average IQ here in the States is 90-100. That's not high, for anyone wondering.
And as far as all of the (countless?!!) complexities involved in doing a job right go, let's not even go there.
But on the other paw, I'm chuckling after reading about the Bookcase, Office, Poop, CatWall, Floof, and Food cams being back up and running. That's gotta be cause to smile.

I mean I’m not even counting the times they’ve lost an economy shipping envelope. It feels like extortion when I have to opt for higher shipping on eBay just to be assured I may actually get my package. Usually. Except when Mr Random takes it on his route and doesn’t return it. Whenever I get an ESUS tracking number, I figure there’s only a 50/50 chance I’ll actually see it. And there’s a 0% chance that USPS will help me recover a lost ESUS. I don’t understand that. Is ESUS packages not delivered by USPS?!

My bonus burger and a beer wasn’t as relaxing as I thought it might be. They are having some kind of event tonight or maybe I just never see the Friday afternoon crowd. But my usually mostly chill taproom is feeling more like a loud and busy bar. I guess I’ll be heading back home sooner than I thought.
