In heat and how long

I guess I need to change my screenname to 4kittys now. About 2 months ago I rescued a kitty being thrown out of a car. Well, now she is in heat, big time. It has been so long since I have been through all this as my other females are fixed. How long is a kitty in heat and can you tell when the "prime time" is for getting pregnant?

Also, how can you tell if a male cat have been fixed? My male adopted us back in March and I thought he was fixed but I caught him on top of the female last night. Could he just be going through the motions?

I can not have kittys so I am trying to keep her inside until this passes and then hopefully talk to my humane shelter about helping me getting her fixed.

If there is any doubt about your male being fixed, keep them separate until she is done with her heat. Unfortunately, it may already be too late if he's not.
