Hi everyone, I am considering getting a golden BSH from a Russian cattery. Here is their website, Обложка. I just wonder whether anyone on this forum has any experience in importing a kitten, so he/she can shed some light on this. They are asking $1500 for the kitten including the transportation cost, which raises my doubt since BSH here in the US of the same quality would probably be way more expensive.

When I have imported kittens from Europe, I arranged the transportation and picked up the kittens myself. I would be cautious about importing a kitten sight unseen, unless I knew a lot about the breeder or had a mutual friend that could vouch for the breeder.

How are they proposing to transport the kitten to you? If they have a cheap way of transporting the kitten, such as a friend that is flying to the US for some other reason, that might explain why the total cost is lower than you expected.

Also, I see that the breeder you mention is very active on Facebook; you might look on Facebook and see if you have mutual friends who can tell you more about the breeder.

I made a mistake. They did not include the shipping cost into the price. So basically they will ship the kitten to me via cargo. Is that an acceptable way? Like will there be any problem for the kitten to go through the custom? I also plan to do a skype with the owner so I can see the cattery for myself.

It's better if the kitten can travel in the cabin. Maybe they know someone who can fly with the kitten?

I would not ship an animal through cargo, especially not a baby.

Why are you looking to import this kitten?
I want a golden BSH, but I cannot find any cattery in the US with available kittens.

Hi vanstar. If you consult Google's "British Shorthair Kittens for Adption Near You" you will get a list of BSH kittens for adoption throughout the US towns indicating their colours, etc. Good luck if that interest you.

I agree that shipping cargo is a very bad idea, especially for a kitten. Also, on the Maine Coon Cat Lover's page on Facebook, I have seen a couple of sad cases where the kitten never got shipped even though the adopters were given videos & photos; even worse, 1 little one was deceased in her crate on arrival. The heartbreak was terrible.
Maybe the US consulate would have a suggestion for you - perhaps an employee is coming home on leave and could escort for you.
A golden BSH sounds very lovely indeed! Please keep us updated on how it works out.
