Hello everyone i just came across this page and I thought well what will it hurt. I'm here regarding my cat AK, hes 9 years old, and more or less the love of my life. I've had him since he was born and we've never had a medical issue until now. Hes on so many medications and he salivates so much but i know he needs to take them. his tongue sticks out, he hyper salivates and basically hates me when i give them to him...should i keep doing it an d at least finish out the script> ive highlighted my 3 vet visits for you and i pray someone can help me. I don't want to give up on him but this is such a struggle. his jaundice is still here from November ;o(
He's had jaundice since about the 28th of November 2018, I took him to the vet and drew some blood the very next day. His alp count were at about 598 which was extremely high. They said he was in liver failure to rush to have an ultrasound to make sure its all OK inside of him and they will be able to tell me why hes in jaundice and how to get him out of it. So we leave the first vet with fluids, a 14 day antibiotic and results from blood test. The liver and bilirubin very high... hes not eating a lot, barely drinking water, not into it, lethargic, drinking juice from tuna or tasty treat juice from wet snacks/ the wetness on cat food is what he will eat up until whatever he can stomach, not throwing up. coats really bad hes starting to get flaky. But hes eating so were OK.
One week later Dec 6 2018. 2nd vet we go to where we are able to get an ultrasound (with no biopsy's) . Ultrasound results looks great they say. his liver looks great they say. his kidney well one is bigger than the other, but they say that's OK too. They want to draw some blood to see if his levels improved in the liver. they want a UA........ results from blood are way better and his count went down to 321 from 598.... they cant get a UA so i need to catch it at home on my own.... long story short that vet says I HAVE A SICK CAT NOT A DYING CAT AND HES FINE BUT THEY STILL DON'T KNOW WHERE THE JAUNDICE IS COMING FROM. hes still drinking about a minute of water in am and a minute of water in pm. Still eating the tops of wet food like the juices and a tiny bit of the food because to me it looks like somethings wrong with his mouth and it looks like it is just so hard for him to eat, but hes doing it. he does have dry blood around his mouth, Extremely jaundice inside the mouth and so so pale and yellow on the gums and body... but still doing his best... they give us cerenia and renal diet food. still doing fluids pretty much everyday since this started.
DEC 10 4 days later bring him back to the vet bc i cant catch his pee at home.. they get the pee and say its perfectly fine nothing found in pee... they want to do more blood. they want to hospitalize they say hes not looking good. i cant afford the 2500 stay so i ask what can i do it at home... Oh hes now not eating for a day in a half.. still doing fluids. they want to check blood but at this point i need to see a specialists ( i thought the ultrasound guy was gonna be a specialist and turns out he was but hes mobile so its like not helpful at all and cant do a follow up with him so i paid all that for ultrasound with no biopsy for nothing.... )
Take cat home, start syringe feeding (should i have been doing this for weeks now) give 2 injections of cerenia and now i am giving denemarian. still giving fluid.
finally get an appointment with specialists 12/18/2018 Dr says "We know from AK'S previous evaluation that he has significant disease of the liver/and or gal-bladder. the most common diseases of these organs in cats are fatty liver disease ( from not eating enough.) bacterial infections, lymphoma ( a kind of cancer) or an inflammatory disease called chloangiohepatitis. we tell these apart by taking samples of the cells from the liver and the gall bladder for evaluation by a pathologists and for culture for infection. we can treat him with antibiotics in case of infection, with food in case of fatty liver disease, and with supportive therapy that would help any of these conditions. if these help then we continue these until his condition resolves. if this isn't enough then we can add PREDNISONE which helps control lymphoma and inflammatory disease.. cat not eating on his own. taking syringe feedings like a champ BC i know hes starving. still jaundice i'm feeling like a bad mom for even doing this to him. am i doing this for a reason right now? why am i even at this vet is he suffering?
Dr orders 12/18/2018 keeps syringe feeding keep doing fluids and start four medications........
12/22 MY cat hates me ;o( but 2 days in on the meds he drank the top of the fluids in wet food for the first time in weeks. small sign hes getting better. hyper salivating when its med time. he looks like the meds are just rocking his poor little body. not throwing up just so much spit.
12/22 pm second night of meds and hes continuing to hyper salivate when i give him mediations he hates them so much and doesn't vomit but his salivating looks like a santa
beard and it lasts for like 30 minutes, tongue has been out all night. i try to feed after and squirt water in to get rid of taste.
12/23 tried splitting up the meds to help but it only made him sick at night and then sick in the am... so tomorrow night im going back to all meds at one time.
he took a whole (small ) can of wet food in a syringe tonight. but hates the meds. IM LOST AND dont know what to do. im waiting until the medication is finished to do another ultrasound and the two biopsys. does anyone have any suggestions and or experience? do you think he can recover? do yo think the jaundice should go away with these meds or do i have to wait again and see what the patholigists say and they will tell me after ultrasound. do cats recover from liver disease like this....
all these vets just kept telling me different things and i just want him to get better. i would take him now for ultra sound but they said wait until meds are done. the medication doesn't seem like its working but again i'm only 4 days in . HELLLLP
ak's usually like a 20 pound mainecoon mix and we live in Florida. inside cat and the sweetest boy ever. should I give up> obviously not right>
