When she’s figuring something out I can see the little gears turning in her head.

And I’ve had her for about 2 years, I got her when she was 1, so she’s around 3 now!

Well I lived in an apartment for a while with her before having to move back here, and for a while she hadn’t tried to get free of the gate, I think because the downstairs was unfamiliar territory and she didn’t feel motivated to chance that. But I guess eventually she got curious and once she had tried to make it down once and succeeded then she became very determined

Cats do usually want to be in the areas where they're not allowed. Hopefully your newest modification to the gate will work, and keep her from getting into things she shouldn't.
