To the tune of "For Free" by Joni Mitchell

I slept last night in an alleyway
Where my hoomins abandoned me
I don’t understand why they did what they did
I thought I was family
I’m lonely and scared and I’m hungry
Waiting for you to save me
But the people hurry by
Without meeting my eyes
While I purr real hopefully

It’s cold out here in the alley
And the weather is starting to snow
I had glossy black fur
But it’s matted and frayed
And my ribs are beginning to show
But I wait and I hope while I shiver
Trusting that someone wants me
But the people go by
Without meeting my eyes
While I cry softly, helplessly

Now somebody calls me gently
And holds me so tenderly
She offers a treat and she
Gathers me close
And she speaks to me soothingly
Now I’m warm and content and happy
Curled near my new found friend
I gaze into her eyes
And put paw on her lap
And I purr my love to the skies
*snif*

I once found three 8-week old kittens in a rest stop. They had just been dumped and ran to me and I scooped them up and put them in my barely running car. I was homeless myself. I was living in it.

I stopped to talk to the vet in town. I needed an idea how to get them homes right away, and asked if she had any kind of a box I could put them in, even a cardboard box. She offered to sell me a carrier for a jillion dollars. I didn't tell her I was broke.

They were adorable, three orange brothers just the age for bonding and starting a wondrous life. I named them Larry, Curly and Moe, and gave them tuna. And we went to the supermarket, where I stood by the entrance holding one. They were so cute, I knew they'd sell themselves. I said nothing to the men that walked in, but the women..well, I knew they'd say "Aw" and maternal instincts would kick in. And they did. I got all three of them homes in just 20 minutes.

People were surprised I wasn't charging money for them. I didn't understand that.
And I was sad. ..because they were gone ..even though we only hung out and ate tuna for an hour.

A pox on the heartless creep who abandoned them when it would have been so easy to show a little compassion. This happened 12 years ago now, but the memory is still treasure to me.

Let's listen to your song. Joni is grand.. :)

Wonderful you to save the little ones.

I was feeling kind of grim today and I had written a different ending, but I couldn’t leave even a fictional cat in a cold alleyway.

Joni is, indeed, grand. One of my favorites.

Well thank you, for sharing Joni and your lyrics (and for giving them a happy ending). It made my whole evening nicer, listening to Joni Mitchell for an hour, instead of struggling with the house work, lol. (It doesn't take much to get me to stop and goof off :D

Tobermory posted these lyrics:

And then I posted the Joni Mitchell song she mentioned ("For Free")
so the song and her lyrics could be heard together.

A nightly thing as I prepare meals for cats...as they sit waiting. Watching me. Silently judging me. And my lack of speed and skill in preparing their meals.
They inspired this tune....hummed to the theme from "Jeopardy"...

Where's my food at,
Where's my food?
I have not eat-TEN......since-almost-noon
I want my food
And I want my treat...
Or...it is your butt I'll beat.

Where's my food at,
Where's my food?
Hurry up you ass!!!...
Before I get crass
Give me my beef,
Give me pork,
Or, I'll cut you
You. Damn. Dork.
(whomp whomp.)

............:disappointed:
:frustrated:Top of the food chain, my ass. :sigh:
