I am the proud parent of an 11 year old son (only child). He's in middle school this year (6th grade) and eating the experience up with a big spoon! A few months into the school year I got curious as to whether he was starting to notice girls or not. He was and mentioned a girl whose locker is next to his. They also are in the same home-room. He'd never mention her on his own but every now and then I'd ask how she was.
Well, for Valentine's Day the school choir did a fundraiser by selling conversation heart candy, carnations & roses. I asked my son if he was going to get anything for his friend and I told him that I thought a carnation might be nice. Last Thursday I heard him getting money out of his bank. When he got home I casually asked if he had ordered a flower or candy for his friend. You can imagine my amazement when he said that he had gotten a box of candy, one carnation & two roses for her!
It turns out that about two weeks ago she was in an automobile accident and had both of her legs broken. She'd been in the hospital since then! So yesterday after school his dad and I took him to the hospital to drop off his candy and flowers.
They were so cute together! Her mom was happy to see my son and said that her daughter kept talking about him, wondering what he was doing. The poor girl has three breaks in her two legs. She'll need months and months of rehabilitation. I was so glad we went, so proud of my son for being brave enough to visit a girl in the hospital. Judging from what her mom said the feelings must be mutual.
So, does anyone else have stories of 1st loves? I always kept things from my parents and so never had an experience like my son did yesterday. How 'bout it? Anyone else want to share their story?
