i have a chubby cat, ok, he is fat. he has been on a diet for the past year and it seems that he is still gaining weight. i know the first thing that is going to be said is that he is still eating too much and he needs to be given less. my vet has told me that frodo needs around 320 cal to maintain the weight that he is and between 220 and 250 cal to lose weight. i am currently feeding my cats 2 times a day. they get 1/2 a can of wellness chicken or turkey food (220 cal/can) and 1/2 a cup of orijen cat food (540 cal/cup) between them, split over the 2 meals (1/4 can and 1/4 cup at each meal). that is 380 cal between them a day. blue is not losing weight. frodo is still gaining. i just don't know how this is possible. he is due for his check up this month so i am thinking that i will ask the vet for some blood work. we have had him on this diet for a year now and he is definitely not losing weight. we have not weighed him because he does not like getting in the carrier or the car and the only way to get a really good weight for him would be at the vet. i thought that he was gaining weight but my husband just kept saying that he didn't think that he was. a friend of mine just watched a video of frodo the other day and she asked if he was getting bigger, so that kind of confirmed to me that he really is gaining weight still. he has lots of toys and he plays with them, but maybe we should be playing with him more... he also plays with his sister and he does run around the place at least once a day. he does not get treats, just lots of cuddles.
we cannot afford to feed only canned food. that would be 2 cans a day - one each - and it is just way out of our price range. i can't find any food that i would consider feeding them that is less than $1.50/can. i can't afford $3 a day to feed my kitties. i really wish that i could, but it is not possible right now. i know that all canned may help him lose weight but it is either feed everyone or feed just the cats (that makes me really sad!) and, unfortunately, frodo is addicted to his dry food just a little too much.
has anyone else had the same problem with their kitties? how did you help your guy lose weight? frodo is 7 years old. he has always been a little chubby but for the past few years he is now getting into the fat category and out of the chubby one. i am really worrying about his legs and joints now. i want him to live a long healthy life. please help me...
