Hyperesthesia Freakout Episode

My kitty has always been a little bit of a lovely weirdo, stopping halfway in a play session to lick his back neurotically for a few seconds or suddenly stop running at full speed to casually lick his paw and then carry on running. He’s also always been very afraid of "strangers" entering our house, instantly hiding beneath a futon base in one of the rooms.

But the other night, something changed. Someone came over to drop something off and we chatted briefly by the entrance door. He wasn’t in the room where the futon hideout is and had to make a run for it in-front of us to get there. Once this person left, he went completely mad, jumping frantically from every piece of furniture, zig zagging the entire house at a very fast pace as if something was chasing him, licking himself demonically at each turn. His pupils were very dilated and he was panting very heavily. Totally freaked me out, it was so upsetting to witness this. He looked possessed.

After 3 hours of this (!), we thankfully all went to sleep. Only to wake up the next morning to more of this… I found him sleeping in his litter box, something he's never done before.

After an emergency visit to a vet I’ve never seen before, the vet concluded that it was due to a recent pain issue in his back leg (he fell off a chair and possibly strained a muscle three days prior to this), which must’ve continued to hurt him without him letting us see it, and then the visit from the “stranger” just sent him right off the edge into what she called a sort of panic attack (hence the panting).

She gave me five days worth of pain killers and said the hyperesthesia should reduce once his pain/trauma disappears. But I wonder. I’ve seen some Youtube videos of cats with FH and theirs seem pretty mild in comparison to the demonically-possessed behaviour he’s having. He's very distant and doesn't respond well (or at all) to commands anymore. He just seems lost in his own world, seeing things...

I know that FH is not a behavioural problem, but I wonder whether this episode will actually last... forever? Or forever as long as he stresses out?

He’s already eating a 100% wet food diet, which is Merrick’s Limited Ingredient Diet, and I've read that that helps. I think I'll give Feliway diffusers a try as well, but what else could I try? I’m really not into hardcore meds.

Thanks in advance!

I dont really know what to tell you. Other than try the meds for the 5 days, and see if he is better. If not then i would go back to the vet. He may even need a referral to a specialist. If he continues to have the problems he may need hard core meds. May not be something you can deal with over the counter. I hope not, but continue to work with your vet, and do keep us updated!

Hey thanks for the input. He's finally almost back to his old self this morning, yay!!! You have no idea how happy I am.

He still has 3 doses of pain killers left, which I'll finish up, but basically this taught me that tons of things can trigger him into having a REALLY bad episode. I really think the combination of having hurt himself, us not being able to play with him for a few days due to this injury (so a break in the routine and then frustration), and then the visit from people he doesn't know just really set him off into another world.

Last night he was still chasing his tail as if it were not part of his body, but this morning, his whole attitude and demeanour changed. He's able to look us in the eye and play without paying attention to his body at all.

I'll buy some Feliway infusers and turn them on when I know we're getting visitors and see if that helps. And I'll talk to my regular vet as well and see what she thinks. Thanks again.

Glad he is doing better. This illness is something they dont really know a lot about, i don't think. Im sure stress, and the injury could have brought on a bad episode. Cats don't deal well with change in their routine on the best of days.

Finish the meds, try to keep his routine as stable as possible, and keep working with your vet. I hear all different things with Feliway, some say the best thing ever, some say it does nothing. :dunno: Hopefully all will be well with him, but if he continues to treat his tail as a stranger, or other symptoms i think there are long term medications they can use that help. Better medicated than miserable i think. Good luck, and do keep us updated.

Soooo... looks like I spoke too soon. He was doing great all day until suddenly this afternoon, boom, another episode of treating his tail as a complete stranger and running away from it. Trying to figure out what could've triggered it this time...

Right now, I'm just trying to work out what would be the best tactic for letting him know that I don't want him to hang out in his litter box each time a new episode breaks :ohwell:
For some odd reason the litter box seems to really comfort him in this freakout moment, and I don't want him to think I'm scolding him and then create an aversion to the box. Gah, I hate FH.

Will definitely give my vet a call tomorrow and see what could be done!

So sorry he had another episode! I think if the litterbox helps him calm down i would let him stay there. what ever it takes. I dont know if there always needs to be something that triggers it. I think sometimes it just happens. Bless his heart. I hope your vet can give you some better information. Do let us know.
