My 16 week cat weights in at 6.8lbs. Apparently, he should only weight 3lbs. He's not fat by any stretch. Has anyone had a kitten that tipped the scale? I don't think we are feeding him too much. He gets what he should a day but seems to be just a big kitten.

Hi! What is his breed?
As you mentioned, kittens need to eat as much as they will consume.
What was it that provided the weight?
He's a heinz 57. His mom was a smaller cat and his dad is a mystery

I wouldn't worry. Just make sure he isn't getting unhealthy in body condition but that's not a worry until he's at least six months old. Given how much he's growing I'd say more like a year before you start worrying.

What matters is the body condition, not the scale number. You could have a skin-and-bones cat who weighs 10 pounds because it is a Maine Coon.
