Well, my air conditioner broke today. UGH. It's currently 97 degrees here in Seoul and very humid. I'm not sure about how hot it is inside right now as I don't have a thermostat. I would say maybe low to mid 80s. For a human, it's not super comfortable but it's bearable... The kitchen and bathroom are quite a bit cooler and the bathroom has tiles so that's good. Landlord bought a brand new air conditioner, but they can't install it until tomorrow or possibly the next day.
I am so worried about my kitties, and wondering just how worried (or not worried) I should be. Clove seems fine so far actually. She has been playing and running around but takes breaks to sprawl out on the tiles. She seems to be her normal holy terror- I mean, normal self just taking it easy on a hot day. I am more worried about Chilli because she is so fluffy. Weirdly enough, she keeps going to the hotter parts of the house (her normal sleeping spots). Even if I bring her to a cooler part she just goes back there. And she isn't sprawling out or lounging but just curling up and sleeping like normal. She keeps running up to her usual nap spot in the loft, which is arguably the hottest place!
Both cats definitely have a faster breathing rate than normal, and that worries me. But they aren't panting. Both are eating just fine if I offer them food or treats, and both of them will get excited and bat at a toy. Not lethargic or in distress that I can tell. Neither is dehydrated based on skin tenting. Seems like they just want to chill and sleep. But maybe there's a symptom I'm not thinking of.
So far I've been wiping them down with a wet towel and making sure their paw pads and ears have a chance to cool down... giving them ice cubes to play with... I also made a homemade cool mat by putting some frozen flat packs of soup and laying a sheet over them. I just plopped Chilli down on it and she was like "...what?" and looked at me and sat there for a moment and then stood up and left. She went back upstairs and is sleeping in the hot loft now! I've also set out plenty of bowls of cold water with ice in them and opened the shower door so they can chill on the damp tile if they want.
Will she be okay? What kind of signs can I look out for?
My air conditioner broke last year in my old apartment (when it was just Chilli) and it was MUCH hotter than this - like an oven - I couldn't even be in there. It was a tiny one-room studio with direct sunlight though. I had a friend in the same building so I ended up letting Chilli sleep over at her house which worked out okay. I'm trying to decide if it'd be more stressful/dangerous for the kitties to just try to stay cool here, or if I should figure out a place they can stay for the next day or two.
Anyway... would love to hear any advice or thoughts. I'm very protective of my little fluff ball girl.
Please cross all your fingers for us that we can get the AC installed tomorrow and not the next day!
(Random sidenote: my current medication does make me feel noticeably hotter and sweatier than normal, so it's possible that I'm overestimating how hot it is in here!)
