Because an increase in water drinking can be symptomatic for other things I would call my vet and see if they think your observations regarding his water intake warrants a vet visit or more observation because of a lack of other symptoms.

None of us really pay much attention to the amt of water our cats drink, as long as they are healthy and there is no obvious or dramatic changes in water or food intake.
But when it's not hotter outside, or being fed something different that might have caused excess thirst lately, it's usually a signal that something's up....
