Just thought I would give an update on the situation with our little stray kitty Tofu. As you know we took her in on November 20th so she's been with us 47 days today. I noticed her stomach getting big on December 18th and felt movement on the 20th. Since then everything with her pregnancy has been business as usual until yesterday. I noticed in the morning yesterday that Tofu keeps sitting up and having a weird look on her face and then she starts to lift her back leg as if she's going to lick her genitals but then she stops halfway down, looks weird some more and then starts licking her belly. This went on all day yesterday sporadically and with long gaps in between.
Now this morning she is restless. And she keeps doing the lift her leg thing and sometimes she's licking her genitals and her stomach as well. She's doing it quite frequently today and with more intensity than yesterday. She wants into my bedroom in the worst way but it's off limits and you can't open a closet door without her running in there. My hall closets aren't suitable for her to give birth in so she's gotta work with me here and have her babies in the kitchen in one of the many nesting spots I have put up for her. But guess what? She doesn't want to stay in the kitchen and if you open the door a crack she's running out. So now I'm in the kitchen for a while with her keeping watch.
I made her a nest from a 63 Liter tote box with a lid and she's moved it today about 2 feet from where it's always been...lol
Keep you fingers crossed that all goes well with her delivery and I will keep you posted
Oh wow. No Kittens yet! She sounds fine though, they get really restless before birth. I don't think it's going to be long now. She doesn't seem to want to have the Kittens in the kitchen though, maybe it's to cold in there and not an easy area to defend?
No kittens yet but soon I think! Either way, she has a vet appointment on Monday is she still hasn't popped. It was tough finding an appointment because of the Holidays but I got one.
The kitchen is usually warm but the floor is cold because it's tile so maybe she doesn't like that. We also had a big storm last night and our power went out 3 times for several hours at a time so maybe she senses the temperature difference in there today. As far as the kitchen being easy to defend, it is away from my two year old so that would be the best place for her but I guess she has other ideas. The kitchen was her most beloved place and now today she doesn't want to be in there at all lol.
So I caved in and cleaned out the hallway closet because she is scratching to get in like crazy. I put down some Amazon cardboard box pieces, newspapers, and some blankets on the floor. I have an end of a roll of Hannah Montana plain wrapping paper, can I put that in her nest too? Or would that be no good? She's in there scratching around right now and we are keeping an eye on her.
Cats are weird like that. There taste in location changes. If she likes the closet that much though she'll be less likely to move them later on. You could put down wrapping paper if you want. Another good product is aluminum foil covered with the cardboard and blankets. It will trap the heat in and not allow it to escape and also prevents anything from sinking through to the floor.
Okay if any of you have any advice for me now is the time to give it. Here is where we are at:
Tofu has been in early labor all day and now her lady bits have some dried crusted stuff on them. Her milk has come in as well now too. She's now contracting where you can visibly see them but they're not super strong. You can see the outline of her babies really well and she rolls from the side she was on to the other side when they happen. My question is, are we doing okay so far? Should there be more progress than this? Or is she progressing okay?
She also won't pick a nest, including the one I made her in the closet she wanted into earlier. She just wants to lay around in the hallway. Is that normal?
She sounds like she's progressing fine. If she doesn't want to go into the best right now that's okay too. Lay some blankets down around where she is and after she goes into labor you can move her to the nest using the blanket.
Update: Tofu had a small bite to eat and then had diarrhea. Then back out to the hallway. I was in the kitchen and she started crying in the hallway and my daughter called for me. I opened the kitchen door and Tofu came running in and went straight into her tote box woo hoo!!
Okay so Tofu's water broke and now she won't stay in any of her nests. She's wandering around do the kitchen crying and there's a bubble hanging out of her. Is that okay?
Here is the situation now...she had that bubble hanging out for a bit and she was walking around crying for a bit then she laid down behind the kitchen door. So I went over there and sat down next to her and put down a blanket and she went on it right away and she cried and looked at me with the saddest most scared eyes...but she calmed down. She did some panting and the bubble has since gone back inside.
She cries periodically, and few times she cried a bit louder but now she's wandering the kitchen making low cries again...
This is really scary for her so just stay close and act relaxed, maybe read a book. If it was the placenta hanging out and it went back in without being punctured then that's fine.
Okay thank you for the advice...she is quiet right now. Every time she starts crying I get down on the floor with her next to the blanket and she comes into my lap partially and she calms down. I pet her back and she cleans herself. She's so scared that I wish I could do it for her...I also keep telling her that she can do this and everything is going to be fine. It seems to calm her down.
