Hi, my name is Katy. I have a 7 month old persian himalayan, and today had a stray tabby join our family.
I am new to strays, so please tell me if there is anything else I need to do. He is a big boy (I swear half mountain lion) and weighs in at just over 30 lbs. (he is not fat, very lean and healthy looking). His head is bigger then my husbands hand! Lol. He is neutered, so he was loved at one time.
I was getting my truck fixed, and was waiting in a room off the garage. I sat down and mr mountain lion walked up to me and rubbed all over me. I told the woman at the counter 'i love your cat! He's so lovey!' and she said you can have him if you want! He is a stray that's been roaming the area for a year. They let him hang out at the shop because the temps here in northern mn have been -20s. So of course I took him home...I'm a sucker for cuddly animals.
I ran to the vet and picked up some vaccines and dewormer and his own box, and gave them to him as soon as we got home. We then gave him a bath as he smelled like oil (my husband has some nice large battle scratches....not easy holding a 30lb stray in the tub....). I cleaned his ears and checked his fur. No mites or fleas! I then cut his nails (yes, he let me with no fight!).
He is now sitting on the couch with us and is on cloud 9 cleaning himself. Hasn't moved sence we let him in from the sunroom.
I have my other kitty in our room, and will alternate them for a week or so. I gave my Persian some booster vaccines and a new dose of the leukemia vaccine just in case, and want to wait a week or two before they meet.
By the way, we named him simba. It seems fitting, as he is HUGE and orange.
