Hey guys, I'm new here and just wanted to say hi, im getting my first cat in about a week, and will probably have lots of questions. thanks in advance!
It helps to have two litter boxes and move the food and water dishes away from the litter box. Save money each month for the un-expected (but always invetivable) vet bills and emergiences. Provide areas to climb to, hide in and feel safe and secure.. don't make them to hard to get the cat from when its time for the vet!! Keep the cat carrier in view and part of the daily routine. Feed them in it sometimes, play around or in it, or let them relax in it. Use catnip or Feliway spray or diffusers as well to keep that "happy scent" around and relax your kitty. Be patient. Do not punish but instead redirect to something "positive". Teach your cat "tricks" each month, behaviors you want to "shape" into something useful or to keep your cat occupied. Have fun, give your cat the space it needs and the time it needs.. it will seek you out for the attention it needs. Pay attention to its signs and keep the experiences positive, stop before anything becomes negative. Love your pet forever. Good luck and welcome to TCS!

Before getting a cat (or any other pet) be sure to learn all about them by reading books on their care and behavior. And of course visiting great sites like TCS!
