I had a bag of organic herbs de provence on the table.
ingredients: Lavender, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, thyme, fennel [fennel seed probably].

my male ~5 year old cat loves it and is showing the same affect as cat nip which can't be confused with anything else.

I googled each ingredient along with cat and catnip keywords, thinking one ingredient would show up as an obvious cat nip alternative but I didn't read any real proof about these. Lavender is a cousin to catnip and looks similar. I've never had lavender around the cat either.

googling these ingredients most sound actually dangerous for cats especially as concentrated essential oils, but just saying, I do think it's the lavender though, ever heard of this?

I'm not certain...and while most plants are not nearly as toxic to cats as the essential oils, check each one before allowing him to come into contact with them. I DO know that valerian affects cats very like catnip. My girl is not catnip gal, but BOY does she love her valerian!
