I was playing with my cat, Peep, and he started getting a little aggressive so I thought that he needed to calm down. I then put him on the floor by himself to play around. He then started to lay down and would look tired even though its only 1pm! I'm scared! Did I grab him too hard! Does he hate me?Did I hurt him?! I dont want him to hate me!

He is trying to understand what he did wrong for you to stop playing. He will realize its the rough play and hopefully stop that in the future.

If he is still playful after a while- no need to worry. How old is Peep?

If he hates you- he will hiss at you and hide. If he is not doing any of that- then he definitely does not hate you.

How long were you playing? He may just be tired. You don't mention his age, but my 5-year-old has short 'spurts' of play---and then rests. Naps are always longer than play time.

Your cat will never hate you. He may get annoyed if you fail to prove sufficient treats, and he may seem to ignore you when he desires 'alone time,' but he'll always be your best friend.

She hisses at you? Probably doesnt like the hug- or feels like she is being grabbed or constricted?
Yes. :( We made such progress from me not being able to pet her back (she'd bite immediately) to me being able to pick her up and hold her for a little while that, I guess, I keep trying to push for a cuddly hug. She'll allow me to hold her for a little while and then will squirm and meow. If I keep holding her, when I let her go, she hisses, but not in a very loud or aggressive way. I miss the year and a 1/2 or so when I first adopted her when she never hissed. Granted, I wasn't hugging her back then, but she never hissed until I took her to see a vet in between the ER vet and the specialist. That older woman seemed really nice, but she was having trouble taking my cat's temperature via her backside because my cat was fed up with vet visits. She said she was going to take my cat to the backroom. I felt I should say no, but deferred to her expertise. Well, she must have done something to my cat in the back because, after that visit, my cat started hissing sometimes. :( I was so shocked the first time she hissed at me. I don't think I was really doing anything. I think that vet hurt my cat? :angrywoman:

Actually, correction. I remember what happened next now. After that older vet took my cat into the backroom to take her rectal temperature, she wanted me to go see the specialist, so I did immediately. At the specialist's, when she went to check my cat's rectal temperature, she hissed loudly. That was the first time I ever heard my baby hiss. That was what lead me to conclude that whatever that vet did in the backroom was not nice to my cat. :angrywoman: She'd already been to the vet repeatedly for check-ups and never hissed before when her rectal temperature was being checked.

My cat does not cuddle or let me hug him. Its been a year, and while I would love a hug or two, I am absolutely fine not getting a hug if he is that uncomfortable with a hug. He is not a lap cat either. He loves it when I groom him, pet him.

It may take a long time- or it may not happen; getting that elusive hug like we see some cats do it on adorable youtube videos. And thats ok, perhaps your cat wasnt exposed to such handling like cuddling, or hugging.

And he also purrs - but no one can hear unless u are next to him or grooming him. Perhaps he was feral for a while, dont think TNR happened, cause he wasnt neutered when his owner gave him up at the shelter at the age of 3. I also feel his owner may have not known cat behaviors- or too busy or too sick to get him neutered at the age he should be etc. I also feel like he was punished in a physical way if he did anything wrong , because the first few months he would flinch if i brought my hand to pet him after he had knocked off things off my shelves or counters and it made a loud sound. He knew he was going to be punished- he would just stay there and flinch when i tried to pet or relax him after that. I dont know when he stopped doing it, but he doesnt do that anymore.

He still manages to knock off things- and the loud clanging noise will startle him. Last night he was zooming around the house, got onto my kitchen counter and while running wild managed to flip a steel cat dish. The noise was so loud he just kept staring at the dish and then me; as if I am supposed to scold him or react to it. I didnt react- i just checked on him whether he was hurt or not. Then went straight back to sleeping while he kept zooming all over the place.

Anyway, sorry about the long post, but the point is the exposure they receive when they are young and subsequent training defines their personality.
And if they dont like hugs- we have to respect that.

Regarding the vet- I think she may have hurt him, went in too fast or hard. Do they ever use lubricant? I was talking to the vet when my cat was getting checked. He did squirm alot when they were taking a urine sample.

Cats may shove their buttholes in our faces- but they absolutely detest anything or anyone touching it. And if the pain of that procedure lasted for a while, she may have gotten defensive. Like 'if you cant do it right, just dont do it at all', and may think now that all humans are incapable of taking her rectal temp without hurting her. They always remember the source of pain.

Think of a toddler.
Toddlers usually start "getting aggressive" (throwing tantrums, crying, yelling, refusing to be consoled, etc.) when they're over-tired.
Cats aren't humans but I do think that sometimes their behavior in situations like this mirror one another.
If he was getting over stimulated and playing too rough, he probably WAS just over tired and needed a time to cool off and calm down a bit, get a nap, etc..
With an over tired toddler, taking them to a quiet area, sitting with them and reading the first 2 pages of a book usually knocks them out. Keep that toddler in a busy room with TV's going, people in and out, they'll stay awake.
Ceasing play with a tired kitten or cat is kind of the same thing. Once the activity stops, they'll chill out.
If it's very concerning to you, there's no harm in calling your vet and telling them you're worried and maybe they'd like to check him out. And if this behavior continues and he stops playing, yes, call your vet. They're there to help =)

I really doubt your cat hates you. =) If he hated you, you probably would have woke up this morning missing a kidney with a farewell note stapled to your forehead =P

I realize I'm lucky my cat sometimes comes over to cuddle next to me for a little while. I think it's when I give her food she likes or something like that. She used to come over a lot more when we had our own apartment. She'd sometimes lay on my big stomach making a funny face. Lately, I've been putting her down a lot quicker and should be very glad she lets me hold her for a minute or so.

We have a cat that is OBSESSIVE about licking our arms or hands. She will NOT take no for an answer and no matter how many times I remove her from my lap and place her on the ground, she hops back up and gets lick-drunk. It's kind of cute but mostly creepy.
I tried shoving a dog toy under her face once thinking she just wanted to lick "SOMETHING" but nope, she shot Mr. Needle Mouse out of her road and went back to licking my arms.
I kind of feel like a prisoner, LOL

Does she like the soap you use maybe? When I put a certain cream on my legs, my cat loves to gently lick it. Definitely creepy! I hide my legs under the comforter.

Maybe so! I just wash with a baking soda bar (I don't like perfume-y stuff).
Maybe she likes baking soda. I do not wear cologne.
Days like today, spent fighting brush and swearing loudly (and hoping like heck no one heard, but we need a goat or two I swear) when I got stung....twice... are different. I spent most of the day flinging my gloves into the air after a stray bee obsessed with stinging me/buzzing in my ear/making me lose what little composure I have left. This calls for a bug spray, but I ALWAYS come in and make a beeline (no pun intended..."bug spray"..."bee line".. bug. Bee? get it? ...yeah, that wasn't funny) for the shower and scrub this off because I do not want my cats smelling/inhaling it. With an asthmatic cat, I'm now hyper-aware of this stuff.
She seems to LOVE sweat. This is borderline disgusting but if I go outside and do random stuff, minus bug spray and come in and don't shower immediately (please don't think I'm gross), she's infatuated.
Maybe she likes the soap. Or sweat. Or maybe she's a weird little thing. Either way, I love her.

Sorry. :hijack: That means my cat hates me when I hug her for too long. I must stop it. :(
I read a joke somewhere that we hugs our pets and tell them we love them while they struggle to get away. Your cat doesn't hate you. I think we all hug our animals when they sometimes don't want it. Like everything else, keep it in moderation and your cat-human relationship will be just fine :)
