I need your brains... what's the daily requirement of iodine for cats?
Since I've moved to Australia, I cannot find Morton's Lite Salt... so I've followed Dr Lisa Pierson's suggestion to use 3/4 regular iodine salt + 14 capsules of potassium citrate (99 mg each).

The iodised sea salt I'm using now has potassium iodate (iodine content 25-40mg/mg).

Nutrition Facts on Morton's Lite Salt (1/4tsp = 1.4g):
Sodium 290mg
Potassium 350mg
Iodine daily value of 40% for humans = 150 μg * 40% = 0.15mg * 40% = 0.06mg

Recipe requires 1stp of that, so per 1tsp = 5.6g:
Sodium 1160mg
Potassium 1400mg
Iodine 0.24mg

Regular Iodized Salt (3/4tsp) + Potassium Cirate (14 * 99mg capsules)
Sodium Unknown
Potassium 1,386mg
Iodine per 4.2g (3/4tsp * 5.6g or 1tsp)
25-40mg/mg = 105,000-168,000mg per 3/4tsp (4.2g)

Am I overdosing iodine? :cringe:

Or could it be a misspelling of miligram per kilo (mg/kg). If that's the case, 25-40mg/kg = 25-40mcg/g, which translates to .105-.168 mg per 4.2g. I should contact the manufacturer.

According to PetCoach, "The daily requirement for an adult cat is 0.16 mg of iodine for every pound of cat food eaten (on a dry matter basis)."

I don't know how credible that statement is, but that means 0.48mg of iodine is required for 3lbs of food. If Morton Lite Salt contains 0.24mg per 1tsp, then iodine is lacking in this recipe...

According to the AAFCO standards, the recommended amount of iodine for cats is 35 mg per kg of food/1000 calories.

Of course you couldn't have 168 grams of iodine in 4.2 grams of salt ;). So something must be wrong with the math there. If the label isn't clear, yeah, contact the manufacturer.

How could I have missed that! Thanks
So that's 35mcg/g = 0.196mg per 1tsp (5.6g) is recommended.

It makes sense if the label on my salt was actually mg/kg. Makes it slightly lacking required iodine but Morton's contains more than recommended iodine per tsp if the daily value of 40% was based on 150mcg. I'm looking forward to a reply from the manufacturer.

Microgram. μg. Typically, iodised salt contains between 40 and 50 μg per gram. 1 microgram - often erroneously abbreviated "mcg" is one one-thousandth of a milligram, or one one-millionth of a gram.
