Can someone tell me what a healthy weight for an 8 week old kitten would be? If it makes a difference, the mommy kitty is on the petite side, about 6 lbs probably pre pregnancy.
Kittens usually weigh about a pound for every month they've been around, so your kitty should be getting to be around two pounds now. If her mommy is small, maybe 1 pound plus 8-12 ounces would be reasonable. Anything less than 1lb 8oz might cause some concern - has s/he been to the vet yet?
I've had my baby kitten Elsa since she was about 2-3 weeks old, and she's pretty much followed this rule - she's now 5 months and a little over 5 pounds, but she's a piggy and has been growing like a weed!
Well, this she is 7 weeks and is about a pound. But, her mother was extremely small ( she came from my brothers cat), who was quite young. The mother is 8 months old right now and is about 5 or 6 pounds at the most I would guess.
As far as the vet, she has an appt in 2 weeks for a check up. I did call, and they said as long as she is eating and using the litter box w/ no problems I shouldn't be concerned and it can wait till her check up.
I was just trying to get a feel for a ballpark figure on what would be normal. Thanks!
My Hercules is 3 1/2 months old and weighs over 4 pounds. His sister is only around 2 pounds. I find that females are usually alot lighter than males. You have to look at her body structure too. Is she long? The longer the leaner. If she eats and has no litter box problems then she's probably just a tiny girl. My 1 1/2 year old Snowshoe female only weighs 8 pounds. She is very tiny. My kitten Hercules is almost as big as her!!
