I had my three girls microchipped when they were spayed last week. I will have the three kittens chipped when they are spayed/neutered in December.
My vet uses AVID. It's fairly expensive to register them on the AVID website, plus you have to pay $6 for each change you make to the information. It also looks like a new owner would have to pay for a completely new registration.
I found the InfoPET National Registry, which maintains a database for a couple of different chips, including AVID. The initial fee is lower than AVID and changes are free.
Has anybody used this registry? Any problems with it? Is it worth going that route instead of the AVID site?
My understanding is that if I don't register with AVID, whoever reads the chip will be referred back to my vet. I don't know if InfoPET overrides that or not.
