if a cat doesnt get along with (meaning: runs after, growls, attacks) another cat at one time... does that mean she probably will never be able to live with another cat? or could i try again?

Oh definitely try again. Just separate them and make sure you go through intros very slow. Cats will acknowledge their displeasure, but it you take intros slowly, they adjust quicker and easier.

Many cats don't get along at first meeting, and need a slow introduction.

What they said! Cats are territorial creatures. It can take time, especially for a cat who has been an only, to get used to and accept another cat. But, it is done all the time, just takes patience, a few tricks, and time.
