Tei is a 13 yr old neutered male Siamese, his human companion (who has been home ill for the last 10 yrs) went into the hospital 6 weeks ago for surgery, a week later she went into hospice, that day her beloved parrot of 30 yrs died. This left Pei completely alone in the house for the last 5 weeks, except for a short daily visit when the woman's children drop in to refill the kibble, change the water and empty the litter. The family has been trying to find another 'forever' home for Tei and finally decided a foster situation is necessary while they continue to look for a home.
Yesterday morning one of the woman's daughters brought Tei to my place, the minute she put the basket on the floor he dashed through my bedroom door and under the bed. I never had the chance to pet him, for us to meet each other. I placed the litter box, his food and water plus toys, etc. in the room with him and and closed the door. Throughout the day and evening periodically I went in to check on him still under the bed.
He does talk to me when I go in to say hello and get down on the floor so he can see me. I've made no move to touch him. By the time I went to bed he still had not used the litter box, nor had he had anything to eat. That was still the case this morning AND unfortunately is still the case this evening.
It's now going on 48 hrs. I've been thinking that when he needs water he'll make sure to have a drink, same with food and using the litter. However, my concern is that he's so traumatized that he won't take care of himself or am I projecting and humanizing him? If I do need to do something please tell me what I need to do.
Thank you in advance, as does Tei.
