I wrote on here a week ago about my 7 month old, 8 lb tabby kitten being sick, vomiting after eating, and asking for advice. He made it through the night and we got him to the vet for some shots and prescription food and he was all better. Until today. This afternoon he started yowling repeatedly. He got up on his cat tree and was yowling and panting with his mouth open. My husband and I panicked and got him into his vet immediately. He was given a full physical exam. And we also ended up getting him a sonogram to make sure he hadn’t swallowed any foreign bodies. Well the sonogram came out fine- nothing was found. But his stomach lining had inflammation. Our vet and the sonogram doctor said it was probably a food allergy causing gastritis. The vet gave us some probiotic powder, some liquid vitamins for his food, and an anti nausea and anti acid to calm his stomach. We fed him a bit of the new food mixed with warm water as recommended and also mixed in the probiotics and vitamins. We also gave him his antacid med an hour before he ate. The problem is.. he’s still yowling :( he ate all of his prescription food and the liquid that was in there as well as a little water. He’s peeing and pooping- his poop is a little light and off colored than normal- not liquid but softer. The yowling though! He sounds like he is in pain and seems to be a little uncomfortable. He wants to be alone in the closet and doesn’t want us or our other cat near him and usually he is the friendliest,
Most loving cat. it’s so sad :( I’m so nervous. Is he still just coming down after having stomach problems? If so- when should
He start to feel better after the meds? Is it normal for a cat to still be in pain after something like this and for
How long? Thank you so much for any
advice.

It can take a little time, but if he is still yowling today, you need to have him seen again. Contact your local American Veterinary Medical Association and ask about feline specialists in your area, although you may be able to find one via google. And ask about something specifically for pain, something mild. He's NOT going to heal well if he is hurting. The body fights itself. And LET US KNOW how he is! We'll be fretting about him!

Thank you all so much for your advice! Sorry I never updated. After a sonogram and some blood work at the vet, it was decided that Chico was experience gastritis due to a chicken allergy ! We have switched his diet and made some changes and the little guy seems to be back to himself! It took a few days but now he’s back and now more yowling ! Thank goodness. :)

Welcome to TCS. I am glad to your baby is doing better. Thank you for sharing your experience. You are doing an excellent job taking care of your baby. I am an experienced cat owner and wanted to say I learned something new from your experience. I did not know that a food allergy could cause gastritis. Your baby is very lucky to have you as his parent. I am glad the new food is working out well for your baby.

LOL, I actually read the first one as "NO more yowling"! I'm thrilled that this was such an easy fix! I will caution you to read all labels carefully. Several of our members whose cats have chicken allergies have reported that a LOT of foods that say they are something else also contain chicken! Nitwit manufacturers! Don't they KNOW about allergens?

Yes ! We have him strictly on a hydrolized protein prescription dry food for a month with probiotics and vitamins. But the vet said once a month had passed to start testing out other proteins to see how he reacts- we started looking around at other brands of wet food and even the ones named “salmon” or “tuna” all contained chicken proteins or chicken biproduct. It’s so misleading!!! And potentially so dangerous for consumers who don’t read the ingredients ! :frustrated:
