Okay all - my feral (see he's *mine* now, sigh). Well, Major Grey
Djin wasn't in my yard at 9:09 am, when I came out to feed him. I
was late getting up - usually out there by 8:30 ish. So, no cat
waiting - that's bad, right?

I worry he could have been hit by a car.. or someone trapped him,
took him to animal control etc. etc.

The not knowing is bad. Guess I am *attached* to the guy.

He also comes at night to eat, so I hope he was just not coming
this morning because guys were doing work in the gully
behind the house, which he uses as a transport corridor.
Maybe he was "lying low" till the noise of the day
passed and it gets dark.

I went out a couple of times this morning and afternoon,
banging a catfood can, calling down the gutters (he lives in
the gutter system I think...) and generally being a
nuisance to the 'hood, LOL!

I work late tonight, and when I go home at 9 pm (I get home at
will go out calling and looking for him.
Meantime, I left dry food and wet out for him,
in the usual location in the yard. I am hoping he will come!

He has come faithfully morning and night now for over 3
weeks and before that he was coming to the gully, even
if I didn't see him at night! On the few times he didn't show,
the weather was bad, and I had not yet up shelter in the yard for him to
shelter under while waiting for food. (I have that in place now..)

Because he's intact I wonder if he went off to "mate"
and will be back in a few days ...of course he could
have been hit by car, or be in fight or something else.

I really **am** looking forward to when I can catch him
and get him neutered and wormed and rabied - he might
live a bit closer to home if I did that. *sigh* Its sooo
difficult not to worry about them when they go outdoors.

I know he was scared last night by accident. He
was checking out my upper
deck and near the patio doors when I accidentally opened and scared
him.

Oh, I DO hope he comes back!!

I left my smelly shirt next to the food dish - to
re-enforce my scent/food connection - should he
show up when I am away at work. (He usually
comes round 6:00 to 6:30ish.

What does everyone think? Will he come back?
Is he too scared from last night?? Or has
he just gone "on patrol" to check out the rest
of his territory, after spending nearly 3 weeks
in my yard "resting up" and getting fed??

Should I keep leaving food, or only when I SEE
him? Please advise. I am going away Thursday
and Friday (work travel) and have my back up
rescue worker feeding him and my own kitties ...
so there will be no interruption in the food cycle...

Best regards to all, and thank you every one for
your advice and assistance!

Please calm down, feral cats do vanish from time to time and sometimes they come back.Other times you are just left to wonder what happened to them. Chances are your startled him by walking out that door and he left to think things over. He should return soon. That is the danger of working with the ferals, they get into our heart and until they are trapped and worked with, we really can't adequately protect them

Thank you Hissy for your kind words. I
tend to worry alot when cats don't show.

I chase my own down at night and bring them
in, and I even feel bad I let the little Manx out
at all! I know the senior babies are strictly yard
and house and only go out to walk *with* me
following.

So, I can't help but worry about Major Grey.
He may have been frightened. But, then again
he may have come and eatn the dry food left
out, then waited and got scared and left to hide
out till dark.

I will let you know if he shows again. Till I gain
his trust it will be hard for me. I keep thinking
he was near to breaking through - checking out
the upper deck was a BIG move for him. I think
he wonders where his "buddy" Lexi goes when she
disappears up the stairs... he *knows* that is where
I reside that is for sure!!

I am putting his house up on hay bales and moving
it under the tree/deck stairs. To provide him with a
more "secure" feel. Hopefully he'll use it if it is
off the ground. At least anyway I know he knows it
is there...

Take care all, and thanks for the advice. I will
keep the board posted on my "sucess" or not
with Major Grey...

My outside boy Will keeps a very regular schedule. If I am 40 minutes late, I have trouble finding him. When he was new, he would just be gone. But after many months of feeding him he now comes when called, if he is close enough to hear me.

I think Major D may just have left because you were late, and he had an 8:45 patrol to run, or mouse to hunt. Best of luck with him, I hope he is back tomorrow.

Thanks all. Major Grey came back this am. I was out at 7:30 looking for him (hey
am I bad or what?!). He showed at 9:05 - so maybe he figured me getting food
out later than usual? anyway, he came in, he ate near me, then immediately left out
the gate... didn't sick around like usual. But I'm hoping he'll get back into that routine.

Buying hay bales to put the cat shelter up on as I think he likes the shelter "up"
not down on ground. I am also moving it back some, so it is positioned UNDER the
deck stairs and by the tree (where my own kitties liked to sleep in summer ... they
feel "secure" there...)

Here's to hoping he gets the message its okay to stay over! We're expecting
rain Friday/Sat/Sun, so if it does rain, maybe maybe he'll feel comfortable enough
to actually stay in the shelter...

I'll keep everyone posted. Working hard at gaining his trust!

How interesting. I have a stray, Mr. Grey who shows up anytime he feels like it. Are you in AZ by any chance?

Welcome to TCS....There are many feral TNR groups in the area to assist if he has not been neutered yet. Cats do tend to roam less once they have received the procedure and Major Gray will no longer be able to add to the overpopulation. Please contact the groups below.

Additionally...there is an upcoming free seminar on how to work with feral cats:

October 24th, 2005
Arlington, VA
Are you feeding outdoor cats? Are you concerned about their increasing numbers and safety?
This workshop will not only explain the difference between stray (tame) cats and feral (wild) cats, it will also provide invaluable tips and instructions on how to humanely reduce the outdoor cat population in your community.
If you are interested in attending, please e-mail or call workshop coordinator Jennifer Conger at least two days prior to the date of the meeting you would like to attend. [email protected] or 703-626-4288

I have one named Gray boy. Every feral cat care-taker must have one. huh? He is quite the talker. I can't touch him but we have conversations. If you talk to him he meows like crazy. He also comes when I call for him.
