We have a bit of an odd situtaion that I wonder if anyone else has come accross.
We have 3 adult cats who have lived together peacefully for 3 years or so. Wendel is the oldest at almost 9. He's the top cat in the house and always has been with this group, although he's a gentleman and can often be found playing with or grooming the others. He shares food easily. Sybil is 7. She's pretty easygoing and stays a bit apart from the group. Random is around 3. He's always been the big kitten, acting like he's somewhere between 4-6 months old despite his size. He's the bottom of the pecking order and has never shown any inclination to change this. It's not uncommon to find all 3 of them curled up in bed with us in the morning. Wendel and Sybil have been with us for 7 years, Random for 3.
Add to the mix the fact that we had a baby 4 months ago. The cats don'tv appear to have any problem with the baby and none of the issue is directed at humans.
In the past 3 weeks, we've had 3 incidences of something driving Random into an aggressive panic. This always starts when we're not around and results in him growling, hiding and lashing out at anything that comes near him. The first two times resulted in him lashing out at Wendel, who struck back and escalated the situation. Fortunately, no one seems to be striking for blood, as luckily we've had no injuries. In the first two cases i seperated the two of them. Wendel was fine immediately (although other than fluffing a bit, he wasn't really worked up) Random was in blind panic and would take upwards of an hour to calm down. Once he calms and we let them back together, they're back to touching noses, playing and grooming. Both of those incidents happenned in the living room. Friday we added a feliway difuser on the advice of our vet (we took random for a physical check-nothing obviously wrong, no obvious pain). This morning i woke up yo the start of another incident in the kitchen. I was able to sit a few feet from Random and keep the others from approaching him. He calmed down after about 15 min, came over and headbumped me them went and sniffed his brother before they both wandered back to bed.
Any ideas what's up with my Random cat? This is so out of character for him. When he's afraid, he's always sought out his brother. Is this just a new level of play that i'm reading too much into? I just worry because Random gets so worked up...
