My GSD used Entyce frequently, which is basically Elura for dogs, and I found it very effective. It did not cause the frantic appetite that mirtazapine can sometimes cause and the effects seemed to last after the medication was finished.

We received our Incredible Pets order last week. I ordered the duck, turkey, and rabbit. Gomez has been enjoying them all. I'm glad I bought an assortment so that I can switch it up each day. Gomez gets bored of food if it's too much of the same. I'm so glad that he's able to have some variety in his diet still. Like I said, he's our little foodie, so I was worried when it sounded like he would be restricted to hydrolyzed food only. Thank you for all of your suggestions. Gomez thanks you, too!

Another question: Is it okay to crush up pills and put it in their wet food? Like, will he absorb the pill just as well or does that somehow lessen the effect of the pill? I ask because giving him pills is a MAJOR MAJOR challenge. I have the scratches right now to prove it (it was an accident when he was trying to break free of his swaddle). If I could do that, it would be a lifesaver. I did it last night and it worked perfectly, but then I questioned if the pills would be as effective.

Gomez's endoscopy consult is this Friday. Fingers crossed it goes well and he isn't too traumatized. Like most animals, he doesn't like going to the vet. I did buy him a bigger, softer carrier so that he would be more comfortable, at least.

You can crush pills into food. Usually. Some pills like a liver supplement (Denimarin?) are not meant to be crushed. The hazard of mixing medicine into food is that if he tastes it, he may not eat it. The other trouble is that if the medicine mixes into the food, he needs to clean the plate to get the whole dose. If he tastes it and walks away early, you don’t know how much he ate. You could make a tiny medicine meal out of a tiny portion of a favorite food or oil that he can finish in a few bites. Then you can plate his unaltered meal afterwards.

Many medicines can be compounded into flavored treats, oils, liquids, and in some cases transdermal gels.

Look them up here. If you see a formulation and a flavor you think Gomie may like, have your vet call or fax in the prescription to Wedgewood.

Where do you think?
I would be concerned about the fact that chicken fat is the only meat ingredient in the hydrolyzed protein diet. The royal canin one almost looks like a vegan diet.

My fiance called me right after the consult and said that Gomez did well. He said that the doctor is very personable, patient, listening, and seems very competent. My fiance says he trusts the doctor.

I did send a sheet of notes with my fiance with a summary of Gomez's stats, current meds and food, and symptoms. I also put several questions on the sheet. I asked my fiance to use the sheet as notes, but he said that the doctor read over my paper and was very appreciative to have it. That makes me feel so good, because I'm feeling a little Helicopter-Parenty right now. I think the doctor appreciated all of the info and questions, and he actually took the time to type up a response for me to have. I'm feeling so grateful.

The doctor is recommending we move forward with the endoscopy, so we are trusting his judgement. The appointment is scheduled for April 19th. I will be grateful to have answers. <3

This is great. Keep us updated.

Betty White is going for an ultrasound on Monday to see if we can figure out why she only eats half an ounce at a time. It seems like she can eat more. But something else, like nausea, is stopping her. Perhaps we'll also get clarity on her mysterious hairball/vomiting cycle. But I fear the ultrasound won't be conclusive (as it rarely is), and an endoscopy may be in Betty's future too.

G gomie Did you get a price quote on the endoscopy and would you mind sharing it and your location? Prices can vary a lot by geography. Feel free to send me that by private message if you don’t want to talk $$$ in public. Thanks in advance!

I live in the midwest (Illinois) and we were quoted $1,700. We're also in the middle of planning a wedding, so it's a lot of $$ all at once, but we're going to find a way to make it work since Gomez is our baby.

I just laid with Betty for two hours trying to comfort her hunger wails and explain to her why she can’t eat until after her ultrasound. And now I’m sitting in a cold car waiting for the heater to warm up before I collect Betty for her appointment. I haven’t eaten breakfast either. I know too well the lengths we go for these fur kids. 😻

Aw, I hope everything goes well for Betty and you're able to get some answers! You're an amazing fur parent. :) Even though it is challenging, it's also very rewarding. <3

Just checking in. These updates are helpful for my own memory.

The vet specialist that we've scheduled the endoscopy with wanted to have Gomez try a broad spectrum dewormer. It's a 5 day medication. He wanted us to stop giving Gomez his Cerenia and Elura after 3 days of the dewormer to see if he had any incidences with getting sick. Gomez's last day of dewormer was yesterday and he hasn't had Cerenia nor Elura for 3 days now. He hasn't been sick since he started the dewormer/stopped the other meds.

His attitude has also seemed to change a bit. Even my fiance has said so on his own! Gomez had become quite grumpy within the last year and we chalked it up to getting Zsa Zsa, our kitten, but he doesn't seem as temperamental this week. I'm beginning to think that his grumpiness was connected more with being sick/physical discomfort. I'm also questioning if he may have had a worm problem, since his attitude has changed for the better this week. It's really weird because I feel like I'm seeing my old Gomez. <3

I'm very cautiously optimistic. This would be a *major major major* blessing if it ended up being a worm issue and we could avoid the endoscopy. I would seriously cry tears of joy. I'm going to wait another couple of days to see if he gets sick or if his appetite changes at all. I'll also check his weight to see if it's changed at all. Then I'll report my findings to the specialist.

Fingers crossed, prayers, all the positive vibes... we could use all of that!

Gomez is very particular about people, so I'm incredibly grateful to be "his person." We're soulmates. When I first walked into the cat room at a local humane society, he walked right over and climbed up me. I feel like he chose me. <3 So I'm willing to do anything to keep him healthy and happy. This whole situation has taken a big toll on my mental/emotional health, but I'm keeping it together for him.

Isn’t it wonderful when cats “choose“ you? It feels like such an honor, like maybe they see something in you that you didn’t see in yourself! Gomez definitely has a soul…lovely eyes. Thank you for sharing such delightful photos. (There are, on other threads, places to show your “cat in a box,” etc. as well as occaisional contests. Hope to see him there!).

That would be seriously good news if Gomez recovered. His grumpiness certainly could be from not feeling well. He is adorable, with that outstretched paw; I definitely feel that animals chose us on a much deeper level than we are able to understand.

Gomez has not thrown up at all since the broad spectrum dewormer. He's been in good spirits and had good energy. He was "helping" me put sheets on the bed, being very playful, and I absentmindedly shooed him off of the bed. My fiancé stopped and said, "Hey, it's been a long time since he's been that playful!" That was a really great moment. I was like, "Come back and play, Gomez!"

I'm very happy with that particular update. I called the specialty clinic where his endoscopy was originally scheduled to be performed tomorrow and they said they would have the doctor call back to determine if we should move forward with the endoscopy still since Gomez has made significant progress. Fingers crossed that the endoscopy is no longer necessary. That would be incredible.

However, on the other hand, he has developed some cold symptoms over the weekend. My poor babe can't catch a break. He's had clear discharge coming from his eyes and has been having sneezing fits. We're consulting our vet on how to handle this. It sounds like it could possibly be an upper respiratory infection? That's just based on my own googling. Or it could be allergies, a cold, etc. etc. I'm just always worried about this guy now.

I'm determined to get this boy in good health. It was so wonderful seeing him be playful and happy.

Right after I posted that update, I got a call from the specialty clinic and their doctor recommended we cancel the endoscopy! I am so joyful right now! We still have to address Gomie's latest cold symptoms, but hearing that from the specialist was music to my ears. <3

Congrats!

Betty started mirtazapine, ondansetron, and famotidine (she may or may not need this one.) She’s eating so much better. I’m tempted to give this a try and think about endoscopy later. But I know from Krista that mirtazapine can lose efficacy and that just having Betty eating again doesn’t address the cause of the inflammation. So I will be calling around to find her an endoscopy appointment. It seems like a lot to put her through. But I’d rather know than not know. I’d rather do it now while maybe she doesn’t need it than be on the spot looking for an endoscopy appointment when she needs it and still be subject to long wait times. 🤦🏼‍♂️

So happy to hear about Gomie. Keep it up, little guy! 😻👍
