I need some ideas on how to get a cat off canned food and on to dry, This is the little Siamese I rescued. She has tartar and gingivitis. I think maybe she was on canned food and table scraps. Thanks!!!
Can I ask why you want to move her onto dry food? Wet food is actually much healthier for cats. It gives them extra moisture/water (which they desperately need) and far more closely approximates their natural diet than dry food does. Dry food helping with teeth problems is also a myth- it does not. If you are able to feed her even some wet, she will be much healthier than if you feed her all dry.
I was told by 3 different vets not to give my cats canned food. When I had 3 males, and they ate both, there was a lot of vomiting. I have 2 other females and have nothing but dry since babies, and they are thriving. Never any vomit. Thank you for your reply.
I would also suggest caned over dry, but if you feel like they cant take it then I would suggest grain free dry, does your kitty have any health issues? Mine doesnt so when I do feed dry I give her grain free thats high in protein from meat.
A lot of our members are going to envy you, because they have the opposite problem. Dry food contains far too many carbohydrates, questionable protein sources, flavor enhancers, doesn't clean cats' teeth any better than potato chips clean ours, and dehydrates them to boot. If she prefers canned food, count your blessings, because it'll probably save you a lot of vet bills later.
I have been working on two dry kibble addicts for a long time. I've got them to about 50% wet and 50% dry and have given up and called it good. I am one of them that wishes my cats wouldn't eat kibble. One of my cats has had 5 teeth extracted because of gingivitis and that is with eating dry food. My other cat has no problems with gingivitis. Some of it I think is genetic. My one that has gingivitis had bad breath when I got her at only 2 months.
Vomiting might be caused from transitioning as well...Did you try transitioning them from dry to wet? If you just suddenly gave them wet I can see the vomiting happening.
