Hey everyone! I'm posting here in hopes i can get some peace of mind, success stories, or any advice/wisdom.
I adopted my foster kitten from my work a little over a month ago. She came to us as an owner surrender and they said they found her under a bridge as a young kitten. She had an ulcer in her left eye and both eyes had a mild case of eyelid agenisis. She went to a specialist before I adopted her and the vet said that the left eye had ulcered, ruptured and then healed over(she had no vision in this eye either). They said there was potential risk for that eye to rupture again in the future and that it would probably need to be removed. The right eye was fine aside from the eyelid agenisis. I made the decision to adopt her because we do same day adoptions which leads to many people impulsively adopting cute animals without thinking. I work in the admissions department so any pet that gets returned, I know about. and we do quite a lot of returns due to behavioral and medical problems. i did not want that to be the case with this kitten. i knew that i could get her the help she needed when and if that eye ruptured. a few weeks after adoption, her RIGHT eye (the good one) started getting a bit weepy. within 24 hours it was swollen and she was squinty. hours after that, it had an ulcer on it. (this was monday) it progressively got worse and worse throughout the week. obviously i told her to the vet, they gave me meds for her and told me to recheck in a week. but saturday of that week, the right eye EXPLODED. i was putting in her eye meds, (i had her cone off bc it is easier to scruff her with it off and i cant give her the meds without scruffing bc she struggles) she jerked her paw across the right eye and it ruptured. blood squirted out of it and down her face. i rushed her to the emergency vet. they cleaned her up, gave her some pain meds and told me that i needed to get that eye removed as soon as possible. it was going to be over 1000$ and since i just paid rent i didnt have the money and the dr said it wouldnt hurt to wait a few days as long as she got antibiotics. i brought her into my vet on tuesday and me and two other vets discussed all possibilities and checked her vision. both eyes had no vision. the right one ruptured, left one ruptured previously and would probably rupture again in the future. both the vets and me thought it was best to do a double enucleation. this was not an easy decision and it is something we talked about for a while, discussing the risks, pros and cons. the surgery went well and i picked her up tuesday around 5. she was VERY wobbly and drunk. pretty normal after waking up from sedation. but its been over 24 hours and she is just as wobbly as she was when i picked her up. she can not stand. she can not walk. she can pull herself up and take one step before she falls on her side. i had to support her body so she could use the litter box. i have to hold her food bowl in front of her so she can eat. i had the vets look at her again today and they agreed, this isnt really normal. we did fluids under the skin. she seems to be the same in her head? like she got herself in the litter box and tried to use it. she plays with my hair still (her favorite thing) and shes stretching and purring and everything. she just is wobbly and her limbs seem too weak to support her? has ANYONE experienced anything similar to this? my partner and i are so worried about her. her incisions look GREAT. and she is otherwise fine? but idk its almost like she has CH (Cerebellar hypoplasia) now other things ill mention is her ears were VERY dirty, cytology came back, lots of bacteria and inflammatory cells. vet said its possible her eardrums could have had some trauma. she also was a LITTLE weird before this surgery. kind of like she had vertigo? she didnt fall over and wasnt as wobbly as she is now but her coordination was a BIT off? neither of the vets that have seen her can think of why she is so wobbly now. so idk. anyone have any ideas??
