My doctor gave me Theophylline for my cat, but after doing some research I am concerned. My doctor originally ordered Flovent inhaler, but the cost being close to $200 was very much of a burden, so my doctor recommended trying the Theophylline. Here is my concerns, first the capsules look big and I worry if they are too big. Second my research says cats are usually give 2mg per pound. My cat is 10 pounds and was ordered 75mg. Finally it says use caution in cats with kidney failure and old age. My cat is 16 with kidney failure. Does anyone else use the medication, how is your cat on it, if so. Thanks.

Hi. From what I have seen Theophylline is usually 20mg to 25 mg/kg. q24 hours.

Your cat is 10lbs = 4.5kg ( rounded down from 4.54)
4.5x20mg = 90 mg. Or, 4.5x25=112.5mg

You can get the Flovent from Canada much cheaper than in the US.

Hi. Just for clarity, I wasn’t telling you what to use on your cat. I am not a veterinarian. Just letting you know what the standard dosing is.
