Just going back to my comments about carbohydrates. Bacon is a fat/protein and as such will not raise his blood sugar. While it isn’t good for losing weight, it still is an option for a diabetic. Sometimes a once a week treat helps you stick with the diet long term.

Burgers are also fine if you eat them open faced and count the half bun in your meal carb total.

But those are not heart healthy - which is the problem for him. He has high cholesterol as well. Maybe once he gets things under control he'll be able to include these in his diet in moderation again.
