Hi all,
So my boys have to go in for dental surgery on Tuesday and needless to say I am freaking out. Any tips of how to make the whole ordeal easier for them? Right now my biggest worry is that I can't give them their dry food/treats for 2 weeks while they heal and they freaking love those things....

Hi. I know there are tons of members who have gone through dental surgeries with their cats, so hopefully some of them will find time to log on soon, see your post, and offer first hand experience - just check back often!!

Have you tried in advance to see if you can get them interested in some canned foods and soft treats? That would be your best bet. Hopefully, between now and Tuesday you can find a few they will like!

They have a wet food that they like (royal canin cat food urinary + calm because Oscar gets crystals) they just freaking love their dry food! Also I worry since Oscar gets crystals I dont want to give him anything that will irritate those

Well, it's good that you have at least one wet food that they like!! Feeby (14+ yo) has been on RC SO as well as Hill's C/D (both canned and dry). Although, I do think the Hill's wet is a bit grainier than RC, you might want to try that as a back-up should they happen to get tired of the RC while they are strictly on wet foods.
Purina Pro Plan also offers a wet urinary care food.

Hello Ire17. How many teeth are being removed?

More than likely if only a couple teeth are being removed, their recovery may be quick. I had my cat Oreo in about 9 months ago and had his two large K9 teeth moved, the next day he was eating normally like nothing happened.

I would follow your vets advice on feeding. Your cats gums will need time to heal, wet food will be easier on them. Your cat will probably let you know when they are ready for hard stuff, try putting one out and see if they take it.

Not to scare you, but this is my thread on Oreo's teeth removal. You may pull some information from this. Oreo had all his teeth removed except for the front set. I'm five days in and things are returning to normal now.

I hope things go well. :)

I have been through dental surgery with 2 different cats and both had a successful recovery. Both ate dry food with no problem afterwards. I also give them freeze dried raw food with extra water. If you are worried about giving them dry food too soon you can buy meat baby food but make sure it has no seasonings or gravy, just plain meat. Your vet or dental specialist may give them antibiotics and/or Buprenex. Be sure to follow the vet's instructions and write down any questions you have beforehand so that you are prepared.

Best of luck, we'll be thinking of you and your cats on Tuesday. Please keep us posted on their progress. :alright:
