So you're saying the majority of American vets declaw?
Yes, I believe so. There was an AVMA survey done, and I think it said something like 80% of vets will do elective de-claws, even though somewhere around half don't approve. I'll see if I can find it. Those who do it even though they disapprove say they feel like they have to in order to keep customers.

Cats aren't dumb---they know their claws aren't there. I'll compare it to removing a leg---some cats adapt easier than others. The loss of supporting bone will affect a lot of things like balance and general structural integrity, some will be more affected than others. Some will adapt well and have minimal physical trouble, and go on to be fairly happy.

But just like removing a leg, if someone want to do it for non-medical reasons, I hope the vet would refuse to do it or at least attempt to talk them out of it.
