Hello,
I am trying a product called "Plaque Off." It is dried seaweed, in powder form, that you add to food. Apparently clinical studies have shown that it is effective in reducing plaque. The catch is that the recommended daily dose is .5 to 1 scoop. One scoop is listed as having 230-396 micrograms of iodine.

What is the RDA of iodine for an 8 lb. cat? I add life salt to everything but whole-rabbit grinds, and am concerned about too much iodine.

Thanks!

The NRC (National Research Council) recommends (per day) 35 ug/kg BW or 15 ug/lb BW. So that would be 150 ug for a 10 lbs cat. There is no known safe upper limit for cats although there is some evidence that high dietary iodine *may* contribute to cats developing hyperthyroidism.

If I used that product I definitely wouldn't add any additional iodine to their food.

ug - microgram

BW - body weight
