Hi there,

My kitty was diagnosed with stomatitis a couple of month ago. She is also in stage 2 kidney failure, so we are having a hard time deciding on which route to take with her.. I have done tons of research and I know that full mouth extraction is the best option, however when the vet says she may only have a few good months or years until she has complications with her kidneys, I'm unsure as of what to do that's best for her, but also doesn't make me go completely broke, especially if the surgery doesn't work and we need to look at other treatments.

My question for those of you who have gone through this before is how much did it cost you?

When I first spoke to my vet tech about it she guessed $800 or so, but said she couldn't give an estimate so I should take that with a grain of salt. My vet then said $1200-2500. The next time we discussed it he said $1500-3000. Well now we've booked the appointment and they're saying it will cost $3200 max, plus HST, which is over $3600 (CAD). I've never seen anything anywhere that said surgery would be THIS expensive.

For a little context, I'm 21. I'm in my fourth year of university and I only have a part time job. This surgery (at this cost) will literally spend all of the money I have, and possibly more. I've also only had this cat since mid April, and I've already put a few thousand dollars into her in testing, vet and ER visits, food, medications.. I'm losing hope. Any direction from someone with experience would be so much appreciated.

When Amalie got 5 teeth removed it was about $900 after my 20% discount for it being Pet Dental Awareness month *february* and that may have even been part of a cleaning as well. She has FORLs. It's going to vary depending on where you live and where you go. It was definitely cheaper to do the work at the hospital I used in Phoenix instead of anywhere I live now around DC.

I would get a second opinion if possible. You may even just try calling around to see if other vets will quote you the cost of this surgery.

I should add, my vet is not the one doing the surgery. We are going to see a dental surgeon in a city about 2 hours away from where I live. My vet says if he did the surgery it would be much longer and much more expensive because he's not a specialist.

I would join the Tanya's renal cats support group - they are absolutely the best with kidney disease and can guide you on the dental issue as well - I trust them 150%, I was part of that group for years with my renal kitty - they are the best there!

Thanks so much! How would I find this group?
