3 inside/outside cats who for couple of months have been scratching and chewing; mostly bottom half very aggressively. Have treated them for
fleas regularly and tried a dry shampoo to no avail. They are active and eating although lately not much wet only dry. Have not changed anything
in their routine or environment. Had one at the Vet for other things and all they want to do was sell us their Fleas meds. Have 4 Ferals outside that are doing same (they have no contact with them). Flea Meds we use cover one type of mites. Vet said "Bring them back and we can do a scraping". Little
irritating as then we pay again. We can see nothing on their skin or fur at all. Any advice? Thanks for reading!

Hi. It almost sounds environmental - or seasonal change - related since all the cats are scratching. Do you treat the ferals for fleas/mites? If not, even if they don't have direct contact with your cats, those little flea/mite buggers are all over outside and still could be aggravating your cats with bites and you wouldn't necessarily see them on your cats. Also, another type of mite could be involved - other than the one included in your current flea meds.

Do you have other cat owners in the area that let their cats outdoors? If so, check with them and see if their cats are experiencing the same thing. Maybe if they are, they might even have an idea as to what is causing it.

Keep in mind, there are all kinds of 'icky organisms', some fungal in nature, and many microscopic, in the soil that could be the source of the problem. Probably why the vet wanted to take a skin scraping.
