Coconut oil is supposed to be a good option for itchy, irritated skin. Does anyone know the appropriate dosage of coconut oil as a topical treatment? Is it daily until symptoms resolve? Note, coconut oil is not approved for use by the ASPCA.

As I understand it, its harmless, so, use as much you want and need. If its really helping may be perhaps discussed. And that is prob why ASPCA doesnt have it in its arsenal of approved remedies.
But it should be harmless. :)

If you have any possiblility to choose, take one which is coldpressed and organic style. And as fresh you can get. Dont buy cheap with last date due, because its cheapier.

I did once saw a discussion of warning to using such oils. But there the problem was clearly, some cheap brands of warm pressed oils, where they used chemicals to solve the oil. And if refining of the oil from the soluable chemical wasnt perfectly good, yes, there would be some left over rests of these chemicals in the oil bottle. Making the product less desirable, and perhaps even potentially harmful, yes.

This is one of the reasons why you should buy just coldpressed oil (be it coconut, olive or canola/ rapeseed) if you have any possibility to choose.

Hi. Do you have any idea what is behind the itchy skin? It is causing your cat to scratch enough to cause bald spots or sores/scabs?
If there is sores/scabs, watch out for the possibility of infection.

Another remedy for any irritated spots is chamomile tea bags. Any grocery store variety will do as they are almost always German (you don't want English, nor any additives/flavorings). Brew a bag in water, cool the liquid and apply it to any irritated areas with a soft cloth, 2-3 times a day. The tea acts as an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal agent and has both soothing and healing properties. It is also safe should your cat ingest any of it.

Getting to the source of the itchy skin so you can prevent going forward is your best option.
