We do the same at the shelter.

I like this kind for litterboxes: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Casabella-Scrub-Sponges-3pk-in-Plum-Lime-and-Orange-Assorted/21013979 They work better than other sponges I have used. I use dish soap for regular washing and white vinegar if the litterbox needs a soak.
