Does anyone have experience with a cat who is eating jut fine but also losing weight? She is under the care of a specialist, but I'm trying to find out if there is some trick or something to get to gain weight, or at least stabilize. Right now I'm feeding her Fancy Feast Classics and Soulistic in gravy. Also was giving her Swanie's vet food for sensitive stomachs and also Nature's Recipe. I'm transitioning her to the Nature's Recipe because I don't like the ingredients in the vet food. I've tried a lot off different better quality dry food and this is the only one she has much interest in eating. She pretty much gets as much as wants at this point. And she does eat well, enough that she should be putting on some weight, or at least not losing. she isn't lethargic and doesn't seem like she doesn't feel good.
Here is some of Cindy's history, sorry if it gets long.
About this time last year the vet discovered a mass in her abdomen. After many tests, we finally had to go for surgery to get a diagnosis of what kind of cancer. The surgeon removed the entire mass from her colon and a good bit of colon with it. It was mast cell cancer. She then had chemo, 6 treatments I think. After the final treatment, we had an ultrasound and blood test, and the oncologist saw some things that caused him to think she might be out of remission. She also started losing weight again. More tests and exploratory surgery/biopsies turned up no cancer, but low B-12.
She started getting B-12 shots once a week for 6 weeks. Now she is supposed to get them once a month for 6 months. When she first started the B-12, she was just about back to her old Cindy self, and also gained a bit of weight.
During the time she was getting the weekly B-12, she was also on Prednisolone, 1/2 tablet once a day, and some liquid medication that was supposed to be good for internal infection. We finally stopped the liquid because it was causing her diarrhea instead of stopping it, and recently reduced the Pred to 1/4 tablet once a day.
Her vet visit last week for her monthly B-12 shot showed that she had lost a good bit of weight (or seems like it to me). She's not much as it is, not even up to 6 pounds, so she doesn't have much more to lose. We are to keep her on the 1/4 pred for 3-4 weeks and then go back for her next shot. Specialist says that if she has lost more weight, we are go back to 1/2 pred tablet. Her blood test came back everything was normal.
If anyone has any ideas I can try, please let me know, I'm getting desperate.
