So today started out normal. Chrissy was not in labor when I left the house this morning at 8. She was still fat and happy. She has a nice little nest set up in a cozy warm bathroom. We got home about 315 and Adam asked if he could let her out. I told him yes...he opened the door and I saw her poke her head out and I asked him, Is she still pregnant and he said yes, she was still fat...so as the door swings open more he says OH MY GOD...I knew then she had had kittens or started to...I went down the stairs and could see just a little bit of fur in her nest...the blankets were a mess in more ways than one...one tabby kitten in the nest...she meowed at me in her sweet way and I looked down at her...and what should I see...but baby feet sticking out of her bottom # - / baby was obviously breech. I checked the kitten in the nest, he was completely dry so Chrissy had been trying to birth the second kitten for awhile...it was birthed from the chest down, shoulders and forearms and head were still inside. The umbilical cord was detached. I knew this kitten was already dead as it could only have suffocated with no umbilical cord. I tried to gently pull the kitten out 2-3 times...she cried everytime I tried so off to the vet we went...We arrived at 4:00. The vet removed the kitten from her body and it was in fact not surviving. An x-ray was done and we discovered there were 4 more kittens waiting to be born...all in the breech position. After that we put her living baby back with her to suckle and to stimulate contractions. Baby #3 (living baby #2) was born shortly after, a silver tabby and he came breech...the vet had to help him out too. We waited for over an hour for another baby. They administered oxytocin to get her labor going again...after every birth it stalled because of the breechness (new word). We gave her 20 minutes with no births before a c-section was decided. Babies 4-6 were born a gray/white kitty who looks like Mommy, a black and white kitty and another tabby. Babies are doing fantastic. Mom is still recovering from the anesthesia...so we are bottle feeding at least through the night...but the babies are suckling good. Chrissy is still out of it...she looks pretty raggedy...she weighed 9.5 lbs before the births...and 7 after.
Since Chrissy's name is short for Christmas we are giving her baby Christmas names. The silver tabby is Tinsel, and the gray/white is Angel...the other three are yet unnamed...they all weigh between 3-4 ozs...I call Tinsel mouth also...he is the most outraged by his circumstances...everyone else is pretty quiet.
