SHORT VERSION:
So my 10 year old cat Harry has anemia, but he's still eating and still grooming. That's good, right?

LONG VERSION:
6 months ago my cat Harry had an enlarged and torsioned spleen that had to be surgically removed. He recovered back to normal in about a month. However, yesterday morning he was being grumpy and, as he left the kitchen and headed for the kitchen, he started growling and sitting down then getting back up like he has having trouble walking. He jumped up on my bed but kept growling, and kept moving awkwardly like he couldn't get comfortable, holding his rear end kind of up. That lasted maybe a minute or two total, then he was normal the rest of the day. We took him to the vet anyway.

The vet did scans/x-rays and blood work, and told us that:
  1. His red blood count is low (he showed us the numbers but I didn't know what I was looking at)
  2. White blood count is high
  3. Red blood cells are "smallish"
Vet told us that he has anemia, and mentioned immune mediated hemolytic anemia but I was really stressed out so I can't remember if he was totally sure it was that. He did say that they had to send the blood to an outside lab to run more tests and find out what's causing it, because he thinks it might be an infection. We have to take Harry back this afternoon to get the results and find out what more he needs. Harry was not anemic last time they did blood work in April.

Harry had a bad flea infestation a few months ago during and for a little while after his surgery. We couldn't find a vet who would prescribe Revolution until recently, as his old vet had retired and the Frontline junk did nothing for him. Harry also fights tooth and nail against his flea medication so it's very hard to get a full dose on him. The vet tech helped us get this month's dose on him while there (he was 3 days overdue for this month's dose). I asked if the bad case of fleas could have caused the anemia, and they said possibly but they need to run tests and don't want to give a full diagnosis until they get the results back. In the meantime, vet told me that he has to treat what he can see is the problem, so he gave Harry a steroid and an antibiotic shot.

Harry is mostly acting normal, except he's spending the morning on my dad's bed. He did this 6 months ago when he had all the vet visits and surgery, and I assume he's doing it now in response t going to the vet. I'm hoping it's not because he's feeling sick. Otherwise, he's acting normal. He's still eating like a little pig (he was overweight before the surgery in the Spring, lost 3 pounds back then but I think he's gained them back by now. the vet did not bother to weigh him yesterday); So far this morning, he's gone to his kibble bowl maybe 5-6 times to graze, had a serving of wet food and still had some Friskies senior cat bisque after all that. He's not an energetic cat, his activities mainly involve: sleeping, moving from spot to spot for naps, looking out the window, and grooming himself. He's still doing all that stuff, so I'm hoping that's a sign the anemia is not very severe. Vet is checking for leukemia but I'm almost positive Harry got his feline Leukemia vaccine 2 years ago; the old vet gave it to him by accident when we took him for a rabies vaccination.

Anyway, if anyone whose dealt with this before wants to chime in, I'm wondering how bad the anemia could be if he's still acting normal. Could it be

Hi. I have no experience with any of what you describe. But, I wanted to acknowledge your post just so you know we are 'listening'. I do think, however, that Harry eating well is a good sign; lethargy brought on by anemia can lessen the desire to eat, IMO. I also know - not trying to be negative, that FeLV vaccinations are not a 100% guarantee in preventing feline leukemia. But, there are so many variables with what is going on with Harry - including the flea issue - that your best bet is to wait for the additional testing results, and not speculate too much until you get more information from those tests. It's hard, believe me, I know!! In the meantime, I think you should consider that Harry acting pretty much like 'normal' is a good thing, for him - and for you!!

Keep us posted, please. And, we welcome a pic or two of Harry if you would like to share!!

I agree with the above. Eating and grooming with anemia are very good signs. And a big flea infestation could be the source, but why speculate at this point. He's got it, you know about it, and your Vet is working in it.

Yes, waiting is hard, but it's the best thing you can do right now. There are things that can be done for anemia, especially if it isn't too bad, which it doesn't sound like it is since he's eating and grooming :alright:

Hi, thank you for the replies.

Took him to the vet yesterday afternoon, and the vet still did not have all the results back so he doesn't know what's the underlying cause yet. Good news is that the white blood cell stuff is now in the normal range, but his red cell stuff got lower. He said there's a 1 day lag in what Harry's red blood cells are doing and what shows up in the blood work results. Vet says since the white cells are doing better it should hopefully mean the red cell count should stabilize by today. Vet showed that his stuff is just slightly under the normal/healthy range.

I had to drop Harry off a little while ago and leave him with the vet, who should call my family when he has the results and checks Harry's blood work for today. If the red blood count doesn't stabilize, he may refer us to a specialist.

Harry is still eating, drinking, using the litter box, but he's getting anxious from going to the vet so many times. I can tell he's mad at us and maybe getting depressed that we keep dragging him out of his home and to a scary vet office.

Harry died just before Christmas 2020. The vet gave him a shot of steroids to give him an appetite but instead it just caused him to suffer ketoacidosis and that was more than his body could take.

Oh no!!! why would a vet do this without knowing the side effects. Should have only been with your old vet . I am sure Happy is resting in peace and keeping a sight at you from above !!!Your son is proud of all you have done for him and in a better place. I hope my fibonacci recovers back. Please check my other thread and suggest what should we do ?
