I have a very friendly outdoor cat that is 12 and was very sick last month. He had a few rotted teeth removed, had infection from them was given convenia shot, was on painkillers for about a week, got vaccinated, and at one point was only 7 pounds when he used to be 18 that is from months of bad teeth and not able to eat good.
It's been a month since his vet treatment at the vet they said he had diarrhea with some blood and thought his weight loss was from something else and gave him tests. All stool samples and blood tests came back normal. He had a sonogram of his stomach and that looked normal.
He is eating and drinking ravenously now over the month and I can feel he is putting on a good amount of weight and he is very active and playful. The only issue is he still has chronic diarrhea! I've tried probiotics thinking all those months not eating and infection probably threw his digestive system badly out of whack. They aren't helping. The vet said if he isn't improving they wanted an internal exam and biopsy and it also might be food sensitivity or another medical issue requiring meds, but we cannot afford that care if anything further is wrong, and being outside I can't help what he gets into and don't have money for special diet food.
Do you have any thoughts what might be wrong? Could this kill him if left untreated?
