My 3yo male cat has been vomiting 6 times a day since yesterday and twice today. I took him to the vet and they gave him a shot to help stop the vomiting (which he did stop) and prescribed him with Sucralfate and ‘Omeprazole + Sodium bicarbonate’ to eat twice a day before his meals. He is very lazy and sleepy now which isn’t like him at all (he’s very mischievous) and the vet told us to not feed him anything until 8 at night. He didn’t take x rays or anything and I’m scared he has some blockage. He also recommended we feed him boiled chicken for tonight. Is he going to be okay?? I don’t feel very reassured by the fact that the doctor doesn’t even know exactly what’s up with him..

I literally just went through something similar with my cat over the weekend. Was your cat eating any food at all during the time he was vomiting. If not, then the yellow liquid sounds like stomach bile, which they can vomit if they haven't eaten anything. Ruby vomited the bile 4 or 5 times over the weekend. She went to the vet yesterday and got a Cerenia shot for the nausea. I presume that is the same shot your vet gave your cat.

What time did you go to the vet? I had to wait 2 hours after the shot to feed Ruby. So maybe that's the reasoning for the no food before 8.

As for x-rays, my vet also didn't do any. Just felt around Ruby's stomach, and thankfully felt nothing off.

Ruby has had issues like this before, so this was probably another flareup. Hopefully it's a one time thing for your cat, and that he's back to normal soon.

No he didn’t eat anything during the vomiting but had wet food a few hours prior.
Did the vet tell you why ruby was vomiting? Is it triggered by something?
I went to the vet around 1-2pm..
Was ruby okay after the shot or did she also get prescribed something else alongside.. I’m glad ruby is okay now and I hope the same for mine

Since he wasn't eating, that sounds like the yellow liquid was bile (stomach acid).

Ruby's always had a sensitive digestive system, so this happens occasionally. No idea what triggers it. She's also around 13, so much older than your cat

She did eat after the 2 hours, but only wanted dry food. Overnight she ate both dry and wet food, so must have felt better.

The vet did give me Cerenia tablets, which I am to give her 1/4 tablet for the next couple days for any continued nausea.

1-2 PM to 8 PM is longer than I had to wait.

Does your invoice from the vet break everything down. If so, is a Cerenia shot mentioned? If not, maybe he gave him something else.

Ohhh I see, Louis has never had such problems so this was a huge scare

he’s just been sleeping and not even asking for food so I figured he’s nauseous and can’t yet eat anyway

the vet bill only mentions charges for the shot not what it was but I’m guessing it’s something of the same function as cerenia

Hi, if your cat continues to be lethargic, I would get a second opinion asap. With a 3 year old cat, the cause of vomiting should be investigated. You are right to bd concerned about a blockage. I have never heard of giving a cat sodium bicarbonate. Did they do any blood work?

I took him to a second vet today because he didn’t seem to be getting better and hadn’t eaten in more than 24 hours. This vet gave him IV treatment and did an X-ray which he said he wasn’t certain about yet. He is still at the vet (I left him at 12pm) and have been told to pick him up at 8. I am extremely worried because he was behaving very aggressively at the vet and I fear he’s getting sicker.. and no they didn’t do bloodwork

Oh and the sodium bicarbonate was a buffer in the omeprazole

I don't see anything that would indicate an obstruction. Did he get tested for pancreatitis? Not eating and vomiting are symptoms of both pancreatitis and IBD. It also looks like your kitty needs to poop. If s/he is somewhat constipated, then kitty won't want to eat.

No he didn’t but they gave me some anti-nausea injections, hepatoprotective medicine and gave him a iv treatment as he hadn’t eaten for a day and a half. he hasn’t used the litterbox since yesterday morning and it’s night now.. he’s sleeping now and won’t play or eat

I would ask the vet about B12 for one thing and Zofran (Ondansetron) or Cerenia to help calm his tummy. He also probably needs to be on a steroid to help reduce inflammation

B12 is a vitamin that is given via injection that helps the kitty absorb nutrients from food and feel better. We give my IBD kitty B12 injections monthly now.

Hi. Unfortunately he is rotated on the X-ray. The abdomen does not appear normal to me. The liver may be slightly enlarged, but it is hard to tell. He is not a very big cat is he? He looks fairly lean in the X-ray. There is an area that I believe may be part of the stomach that has air in it. This could cause great discomfort. So, he is home now? I would expect him to be very tired after the vet visit. Is this the only X-ray they took

If he was my cat, I would get a referral to a specialist if you can. There is obviously something wrong and I think your best way to find out what, would be with a specialist. Your vet can refer you if you ask.

The next logical step would be bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound with a board certified radiologist or an internal medicine specialist.

Not eating and lethargy in a young cat are cause for alarm and warrant further investigation. Bloodwork needs to be done.

He’s pretty average and weighs 4.3kgs, I inserted a few pics from this month.. he is back at the vet today and has been given more iv fluids and drops to help with the constipation.. he’s put under observation for one more day and unless he improves the vet said he may have to perform an endoscopy or even surgery
