He recently (like 3 weeks ago) started peeing on the towel I put in front of the box. I am not sure what has changed in the house to prevent this from happening. Any suggestions?

The first thing to do is to take your boy to the vet. UTIs are a common cause of this and it may be the issue. It's really important to clean up well afterwards with an enzyme cleaner to stop reoccurences.
