Hi everyone,

I apologize for the long post ahead!

I took my 6 month old cat Brodie to the emergency vet on Jan 1st because I was concerned about his breathing rate. The vet said that he had a slight fever but that he was not showing any other symptoms (lack of energy, change in appetite, vomiting, etc). She said I could just monitor him and that things should return back to normal. He did not show any signs of flu or sickness after that day and so I thought things were fine.

He was neutered just over a week ago on Friday Jan 12th. During his neutering I opted to have the pre-anaesthetic blood work done and I also requested that he be tested for FeLV. His blood work came back fine, he had slightly elevated levels of white blood cells and a slightly low red blood cell count but nothing too concerning. He was fighting a cold and so the vet concluded that his white blood cell elevation was due to him fighting the cold. His FeLV test was negative. She prescribed Clavamox which he has been taking twice a day since Saturday the 13th. He was completely fine after the neutering and returned to his loving, cuddly self the next day.

This past Friday the 19th he only ate a little bit of his wet food which he normally loves and eats very quickly. He also seemed very out of it. On Saturday his behaviour was the same except this time he ate no food and drank no water besides a few Temptations treats and minimal Fancy Feast which I bought especially because he was not eating. He usually eats Simply Nourish wet food and Nutro wet/dry food. He was so lethargic and just wanted to sleep. Yesterday things were the same so I took him back to the ER vet since I am home at my parents house and his regular vet is 2 hours away. His fever was at 40.5 degrees celsius and they performed more blood work and a urinalysis. The blood work revealed the elevated WBC count but again that is due to him fighting some sort of infection. No other abnormalities were found with his blood work, his kidney and liver tests came back normal. The urinalysis results should be back today. They gave him sub q fluids since he was slightly dehydrated from not eating or drinking and they also gave him a shot of Cerenia. The vet prescribed AZithromycin which he said I could administer along with the Clavamox.

I was able to get him to eat some hills a/d yesterday and this morning but only if I physically sat there and essentially "spoon fed" him using my fingers. He has been using the litter box normally but only peeing since he hasn't eaten much. I will make sure to keep feeding him every couple hours. I am going to call his regular vet when they open this morning to update her and to also make sure the AZithromycin and Clavamox can be given together.

Again I apologize for the long post. I am just so stressed and overwhelmed and confused as to what made him change so drastically overnight. I know cat flu can be nasty and that it can take some time to completely go away. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Will I ever get my lovely cat back again?? :(

Of COURSE you're stressed! :hugs: This is your furbaby you're talking about here.

I can't tell you what's wrong, but I think discussing with your regular Vet is absolutely the right thing to do. Did the ER Vet know he was already on Clavamox?

Hoping he feels better soon :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thank you mrsgreenjeens mrsgreenjeens . I truly appreciate the well wishes. I did tell the ER vet that Brodie was already on Clavamox. His regular vet said that taking Clavamox and AZithromycin together is fine so I am going to start him on the new antibotic today.

Since Brodie is being finicky with his food, are there any human foods that I should try to feed him? I just gave him a small morsel of cheese and he seemed to perk up immediately to eat it. He doesn't usually eat human food but I'm wondering if there are any foods I should try to give him while he is sick?

As for the food, I've heard that baby food (no onions or garlic) can be very tempting. I use toppers to entice my fussy boy to eat - dried chicken, dried liver and also Fortiflora. The Fortiflora is digestive enzymes and probiotics and is often used to entice reluctant eaters.

Yes, all of these are great options for picky eaters. Especially the all meat baby food when they aren't feeling well. Mine seem to like ham baby food (hard to find though) when they are being extremely picky

Thank you for the suggestions! I was able to find some 'chicken with broth' and 'beef with broth' baby food at my local grocery store which was nice since most of what I saw contained potatoes and/or vegetables along with the meat. I'm hoping this helps increase his appetite.

pushylady pushylady he is still eating very little. He pretty much only eats when I hand feed him and even then it takes a lot of patience. I just bought some Pedialyte and was planning on giving it to him via syringe. I read that cats can sometimes aspirate if liquids are given to them via syringe which is worrying me. But I am more worried that he will become dehydrated. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Brodie had his first dose of AZithromycin yesterday and today he has more discharge coming from his nose and he is sneezing a bit more. I called the vet and he explained that this is a 'good' thing since we now know that Brodie very likely has a URI and that he is on the right antibiotics. I hope this is a case of "getting worse before getting better".

I just gave him a mixture of warmed up royal canin recovery food and chicken baby food on his dish. He seems to be eating it so I just hope this lasts.

Just wanted to provide an update. I took Brodie to his regular vet yesterday and they decided the best thing to do would be to hospitalize him for 2 days since he wasn't eating or getting better. His eyes were becoming red and swollen so he will need an eye ointment. I had a tough time sleeping last night but I can only hope that he will recover.

The vet is pretty certain this is a case of the herpesvirus flaring up due to the stress of being neutered and the virus causing a pretty severe URI. It makes sense since Brodie started acting differently one week after his neuter and the vet said that the symptoms sometimes take one week to manifest themselves completely.

I hope he gets better soon :(

Thanks for following up mrsgreenjeens mrsgreenjeens !! I made a newbie mistake and started a new thread to talk about Brodie's updates lol. I should have just continued here but anyway this is the new thread: Update On Kitten With Uri (now Pneumonia)

Brodie is definitely getting there but he is not 100% back to himself. He's seeing an internal medicine specialist on Thursday to get a tracheal wash done. His lung xray showed a significant improvement but he still has not fully returned to his energetic/playful self.
