How do I discourage this? My cat has taken an interest in chewing on electrical cords in order to get attention. He does it mainly when he wants to be fed- 4 times a day. It is very dangerous for him and aggravating for me. I have started locking him in the bathroom when I know we are approaching feeding time so that he doesn't chew wires for attention. It doesn't seem to be working, as if he isn't locked up he will still do it.

Cord covers. https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/ca...G9d0SdIzGBcqemhykPMaAhQsEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

You can't stop the behaviour because you MUST respond to it for safety. And really the best way to stop a cat's behaviour is ignoring it.

Your only options are to provide another behaviour, or prevention. Given the high risks with cord chewing, opt for getting covers. Magnus was doing that at the outlet to get me out of bed in the morning. I bought these:

We covered all our wires with pepper sauce. We used the red kind because it was easier to see what we'd covered and what we hadn't. use q-tips and just pour the sauce in a bowl. It takes awhile to paint both sides of every cord, but it worked for us with 15+ cats over the years. You'll need to repeat it when you get a new cat particularly young ones, and you should check it frequently during the first few month - this is another reason the red sauce works well. The smell goes away in less than an hour. The color will fade over time.

We were lucky our chewer chewed through the phone cord and, unlike with regular cords, he only got a mild shock. It's terrible what the electrical cords can do to them, if they live, they can have a lot of damage to their mouths.

Bored cats will often chew on things. Do you only have one cat? If so, try adding a few more play sessions daily. A second cat often helps solve the problem so that's something to consider if you can get a second cat. Hangry cats will also chew on things. Is there a reason why you can't feed 4 times a day? Programmable timed feeders work great and many work with both dry and canned food.

I have probably suggested this in one of the above threads, but what you need is a slip-on cord protector like Critter Cord. It's the only thing that will help.

buy these lengths of wire covers at a home depot or lowes6 bux or so for around 6feet of it. will save your cats life along with the money in your pocket. hdmi cables/pc charging cables etc get really expensive to replacethey dont look pretty but it will keep your cat safe especially when your not around to watch it like a hawk or during the night while you sleep
