Just wondering if this is usual or unique, I've never owned two cats before and so have never experienced it.
Both my cats have their own specific litter box. Sabbath has one in my bedroom, Felix (who is a three leg cat - snare accident, leg amputated to shoulder at front left side) has his litter box in the living room. They will rarely use each other's box (I think if it's an emergency such as Felix can't get out of my room at night he'll pee in Sab's box and vice versa) but generally they respect each other's toilet.
Anyway, I digress. About a month ago (I've only had Felix two months), I noticed that whenever Felix uses his litter box he tends to bring a lot of the very light cat litter out with him. He stands awkwardly trying to sweep it up with his missing leg (I think he still imagines it there almost, it's a bit sad to watch) but eventually stops without making any impact to his mess and goes off happy, none the wiser.
Now whenever Felix goes to the litter box, uses it and has left the box Sabbath will wander over to it, examine the area (the bits of litter everywhere on the laminate floor) and he will begin scraping his paw about outside the box like he would if he was trying to clean up his own mess. He even starts scraping his paw over the table and anything on the end of the table (usually making a noise).
It's a strange behaviour. I don't know if he's trying to clean up after Felix (as perhaps he realises he's disabled and can't) or if he's trying to relay to me what he himself does when he's in my room with his litterbox when he poos. When Sabbath poos, he whines at me and if I'm not quick enough to immediately get rid of the offending smelly article for him he starts tearing stuff out of the nearby trash bin and laying it around, making a lot of noise scraping claws over furniture, dragging his poop scoop out of where I keep it (sounds unbelievable I know but he's very meticulous about a clean litter box). He deliberately goes out of his way to get my attention that there is poo that he doesn't want there lol.
I really don't know what to make of it. Is he cleaning up after Felix or trying to tell me I need to do it? Anyone ever see this with their cats? Either way it seems quite clever (but then cats are I suppose).
