So I was volunteering at my local shelter in the kitten nursery bottle feeding kittens (we had anywhere from 10-80 kittens at one time). I decided that I would foster a litter of 3 and decide between the 3 which one I wanted after they were big enough to get fixed. I had them for about 2-3 weeks and decided that I couldn't part with any of them. So now I'm the proud owner of 3 kittens. They had a set of shots in the shelter when they were about 4 or 5 weeks old. A second set at about 3 weeks later. This was before they were mine and they were still considered the shelters even though they were living with me. So after they got fixed they were officially mine. I was told to bring them in at 4 months old to get their 3rd set of shots and a rabies. And I believed I would be done. I called a local vet and told him the scenario and they started to tell me that after I get this 3rd set I'm going to need another booster set in another 3 weeks. This started making me question everything which is why I am here now. I've been researching vaxs and I'm torn about what I should do and wanted to get opinions. I have one older kitty about 10 yrs, who received shots every year until she was about 4 and I thought my parents never got shots for our cats every year what am I doing. So I stopped. I was going to go ahead and do the kittens until the vet freaked me out and I'm leary of too many vaccinations.
So my questions. Considering the kittens have already had two doses. Would you get a 3rd and the rabies and be done forever? Or would you skip them all entirely forever? I'm hesitant to get rabies since I'm worried about that cancer at the site of injection. And I got 3 I'm taking in I feel like my odds are higher having 3 kitties that one of them could get it. If enough people feel like I should at least get the 3rd series of vacs and the rabies I'll do it, but I just need someone to talk to about it. I was worried about skipping rabies since I am pregnant with my 4th so I'm also uber paranoid about the health of my kids, but I also checked my area and it seems like they catch a bat with rabies once a month and that's it. There are no other reported cases. My kitties are indoor kitties only and we leave in a suburb so nowhere even close to where a bat would hang out.
So would you vaccinate or skip?
Thanks!!!
