I was sitting here in my office and my dogs began barking their "Grammy's here" bark. I went downstairs and sure enough, it was my mom. She looked upset and her first words were, "I'm just coming from having Bozo put to sleep."
Bozo was a white cocker spaniel/poodle cross. He was 19, and had lived with my mom for about 18 years. He had been originally belonged to another woman who had died suddenly and my mom agreed to take him.
My mom loved Bozo. He was her little buddy and slept with her every night, although lately he'd been having more and more issues and my mom was exhausted getting up during the night to tend to him. She is 79 with health issues herself, so it was worrisome to me.
This morning, he began urinating blood, and seemed uncomfortable. The vet said it was likely the beginning of a cascade of body system failures, and although they could probably give some short term relief, it would be just that ---short term. So, Mom made the hardest choice...but the choice made out of love.
He will be cremated and scattered in my mom's "pet graveyard" on her rural property. Two of my cats and one of my dogs also lie there.
RIP Bozo, you gave your "Mom" much happiness.
