What happens if you ignore a cat? I mean, don't look at it, don't pet it, don't touch it, just pretend it's not there. Still feed it, water it, change the litter box. Don't hurt it or anything. Just every time you're i a room with it, pretend like you don't notice it.

That really depends on the cat. One of mine will come and sit by me and then now and then will let me know she wants attention (she's very vocal). My non vocal kitty will come over and poke me if she wants some love. Usually I will go say hello or pet them periodically though. 

Is this a cat of yours or someone you know? If it's someone else's, it's a good idea to ignore it for a while so it can get used to you and come say hello when it starts to feel comfortable around you. 

If it's your cat, some cats are needier than others. Some might seek out attention or start behaving in a way that will force you to pay attention to them. Some might not care that they are being ignored and come say hello when they feel like it.

My cat would start doingg things he is not supposed to, like eat things he finds on the floor that he is not supposed to eat, its funny because I feel like he knows he is doing the wrong thing. Once I was in my room and I heard a noise that sounded like Ariel chewing plastic and when I looked at Ariel my cat, and he stopped chewing the plastic he found on the floor, right as I looked at him, it was so funny.

The nipping is never really hard...though sometimes she chews... and the clawing is part of what cats do. But in playing with the cat or petting the cat, or i guess bothering the cat, she seems to do it to me more than anyone else in the house. And I'm tired of it. It's also very clear she's bonded to the other people int he house as they have to her. She's got two other people to sleep with at night as well as a whole house to roam so I've been keeping my door closed and her out. Shes' got 2 other people giving her plenty of attention, affection, and play time. She's got access to plenty of food and water and litter box. No one is in any way harming the animal. I'm just choosing to ignore the snot for now. She's shut out of my room at night so i sleep alone. During the day if she comes up to rub my leg and say hello i back away. if she is in the room i dont pet at her, call her, or look at her. if she forces herself on my lap, i either shrug her off, or just pretend she's not there until she gives up and leaves. My concern was, is this going to give the cat permanent damage somehow, or will she just figure out i'm harmless but not someone to go to for attention?

Katherine always has to be in the same room as someone. she hates being alone. so as long as other people are in the house i can seem to get away with ignoring her. eventually she gives up and bugs someone else. if i'm the only one home, she seems very needy.

My Sophie broke a lamp last weekend. It was sitting on a stereo cabinet in the bedroom and she jumped up on top of it and somehow pushed it down onto the TV stand below. I heard the crash and went into the room. She was still sitting on the cabinet and she looked at me like, "What? it was in my way. I wanted to sit here." Miss Sophiesaurus was unharmed but the lamp went out into the trash.

My Sophie broke a lamp last weekend. It was sitting on a stereo cabinet in the bedroom and she jumped up on top of it and somehow pushed it down onto the TV stand below. I heard the crash and went into the room. She was still sitting on the cabinet and she looked at me like, "What? it was in my way. I wanted to sit here." Miss Sophiesaurus was unharmed but the lamp went out into the trash.   

Oh my goodness, I just finished wrapping my friend's biirthday present and he came and tried to eat it just now, I moved it though so he can't easy it now :cheese:

Poor baby! You are one sensitive man ! LOL If you want to be kitty's friend I suggest a bag of treats. Mine come running when the bag is shook. Once they figured out where the bag is stored one will meow sweetly while staring at the bag. Catness will stand on her hind legs for treats, it could help bond you to your catgood luck!

I don't think it'll really matter or hurt anything given the situation.  Predicting the cat's reaction especially when there are other people in the house and such is pretty tricky.  If the goal is to not have the cat's attention so much, there are certainly worse things you could be doing.  In other words, worth a try ignoring her and see what happens.  But don't be surprised if it doesn't have the desired results.  Maybe she really likes you and will be more persistent in efforts to get your attention!

I always take issue with the cats' actions being labeled as if they are doing it all specifically to annoy you.  That is not what the cat is doing, regardless of how it seems.  She can't be a snot, she can only be a cat.

True. My dad made a similar point last night. It's not "my" cat, or "mom's cat" or anyone's cat. it's just a cat. and it's not being mean, or annoying, or snotty, it's just a cat being a cat. sometimes we love cats being cats, and sometimes we dont. but the cat is a constant and neutral party. it's just being, cat. it's people who have the problems and the perceptions/assumptions.
