Are white markings caused by a separate gene?

I've yet to find any white markings (socks, stomach, etc.) on Rafaela Puff. Do some tabbies not have them? She's grey.

Is there more than one gene at work, like for socks, tuxedo, a white stomach, etc.? All of our previous cats with *any* tabby markings have also had white somewhere, most commonly socks and a white stomach.

Thank you very much! I'm just curious.

White markings are caused by a dominant gene called "white spotting." Cats with just one copy of the white spotting gene typically have a small to medium amount of white (such as white socks, chest, and tummy). Cats with two copies of the white spotting gene may have lots of white on them, even mostly white with just a few spots of color.
